Hey all i know my system is now probably considered old but for me who is used to having the lowest end pc all the time i thought this was a steal. I have very basic almost no processor GPU Stable overclocking skills but i heard the i7 870 can be greatly OC'ed with very little stress this is the report of my pc plz advise if more info is needed. Any help with user friendly programs and a rough idea of how to go about it would be great thanks in advance..

That computer has:

Core i7-870 (pretty decent chip 4 cores w/HT so 8 logical cores)
ASUS P7P55D-E
OCZ Vertex 2 120GB
Samsung HD204UI 2TB 5400RPM drive (I use 3 of these myself)
4GB of DDR3? memory from what I can gather.
Nvidia GTX 570

It should be able to run Win7 with modern games very nicely @1080p. I'm a little confused, what exactly did you need help with?

He is looking for overclock help, I have no experience with that processor though. Best bet is to find a guide in the intel section for that architecture of that cpu.

thanks for the replies all yes it is ddr3 sorry thought the info supplied would of said that but yea my first post says i would like some overclocking advice on my system(Safe OC) i am running window 7 ultimate atm and can play games fine and my GPU is fine atm also.I read somewhere u can "safely" OC this processer to 4ghz which is overkill for me but i would like to be running at around 3.5 to 3.8 i am also lead to believe that it depends on other componants in your pc hence the reason for the report in the first post. Again i am sorry if this is the wrong area if so could someone direct me to where i should post this to get OC help thanks again all sorry to be a noob but i bet "U" were too at some stage tongue.gif

Heya Chapperz, I might be able to point you in the right direction (read this to the end to help answer some questions in advance).

Based off what you posted, your motherboard is (as ghabhaducha said) an Asus P7P55D-E, socket type: LGA 1156 , which is intel. There's a great section for Intel cpu's here on overclock.net (http://www.overclock.net/f/5/intel-cpus), and I'm sure someone there would be able to help.

I'm actually using the same chipset at the moment, (i7-950), however, the steps to overclock can vary between motherboard and cpu, so the steps I took to overclock my cpu may not necessarily apply to your motherboard. That being said, there should be similarities / same content in a different wrapper. You also have to keep in mind that not all chips are made equally, so while someone might be able to safely hit 4Ghz at a low voltage, another might struggle to hit the same speeds without upping the voltage.

For your CPU, Intel states that 1.4vcore is the safe limit. Because of how each chip is different, I'd hesitate on giving you values to use without you knowing how to use them, as such I'd strongly recommend you read the guide here: http://www.overclock.net/t/538439/guide-to-overclocking-the-core-i7-920-or-930-to-4-0ghz <--- this is an amazing starting point, and if you read it carefully you'll be starting your first OC tonight!

Hope this helps.

That is not a low end system. Even by today's standards I would consider that high end.

Thanks very much i took someones advice and went to the intel section and low and behold my motherboard had options to fine tune it to 3 preset speeds 3.2 was the highest frown.gif but still a nice surprise that they are thinking of us noobs smile.gif

So here is what i have done so far please tell me if i have made any errors

As mention by a senior poster on the post i read http://www.overclock.net/t/1354431/i7-870-asus-p7p55d-overclock-expectations very helpful cheers
i set the BCLK to 180 unfortunately i couldn't figure out how to change voltage manually the post recommends 1.28v mine is at 1.344v (IS THIS BAD?)
i disabled speed step and boost tech as instructed changed the modifier to 22x
So i now have my cpu is running at 3972 core speed i assume that's 3.9 up from the old 2.9 (is this correct seams like a massive jump for very little work?)
i ran prime95 Torture test for 1.5 hours with 42 tests completed and 0 errors or warnings (Not sure how long i am meant to run it for or what this means)

My CPU temps are 34-36 degrees across the 4 cores idle and i believe they were around 86-89 loaded during torture test (again i have no idea what a safe temp is sorry again)

Thanks again all i hope i haven't screwed u too much smile.gif
