What games upped the graphics bar this last 2 years - Page 3

Here's a couple TR 2013 screens. Settings are ultra, 4xSSAA, 2560x1600, TressFX enabled. Open in new tab for full size.

This game looks quite stunning at these settings, but frames are roughly cut in half.

What are those Tomb Raider screenshots trying to show off? Aside from the TressFX lol, that's certainly above average though PhysX is capable of the same thing + much more. Texture quality and ambient occlusion looked great in the other shots. I do plan on getting the game eventually though, screenshots can never fully do a game justice.

First of all, before I write up my selection of best looking games over the last few years, I'd like to add that not every game needs to require lensflare, SSAO, or bloom for it to be visually appealing. Certainly it can be nice to look at, but its not a requirement that needs to be in every single game.

In no order of favouritism:

1. Hard Reset
2. Dirt 3
3. Limbo
4. L.A Noire
5. Mass Effect 3
6. Gotham City Imposters f2p
7. Killing Floor
8. The Witcher 2
9.Tera f2p
10. Alan Wake
11. Borderlands 2
12. Bioshock Infinite
13. Of Orcs and Men
14. Dishonored
15. Torchlight 1
16. Trackmania Stadium2
17. Syndicate
18. Dungeon Siege 3

Hogwash. You posted a few incredibly compressed 600x300 sized screens of abnormal looking textures in BF3 that one would have to go out of their way to find, whereas I posted HQ screens of common textures in C1. Anyone can fire up C1 right now and see what the textures look like for themselves. And all games have a few or more bad textures. My point is that C1 has plenty of them.

All you've been able to do is point out how Crysis doesn't have the absolute best texture quality,

I never intended to argue for or point out anything else. If you go back and re-read my intial post, texture quality was always the sole focus of my argument. I never mentioned anything else because I had no interest in doing so.

Don't know about 4k, most texture mods I've seen primarily use 2k textures.

MaLDo 4.0 uses 4k textures. 4096x4096.

Nothing, aside from contributing to OP's thread on which games have "upped the graphics bar" in the last two years. I think the game looks quite good.

And yep, the screens don't do the game justice. In motion, and at those settings, which some might consider overkill (which I would agree with biggrin.gif), it looks like pre-rendered CGI. It's also a great game that I highly recommend. thumb.gif

Screenshots aren't compressed at all lol, just resized. But like you said, anyone can fire up a game and see the texture quality themselves. The textures shown in my BF3 screenshots are common ones, more common than some of your Crysis ones. Roads and tile ground textures are not rare in BF3 at all. Texture quality is a mixed bag in both games, but I've never seen anything quite so abysmal in Crysis.

As for your argument, do you even know what you're saying? Texture quality isn't the only thing you tried to argue, you also tried to bring up how these games raised the graphics bar, though it's hard to imagine texture quality alone doing this, unless you're comparing Crysis to Minecraft.

MaLDo 4.0 is a Crysis 2 texture pack. The post I replied to was discussing Skyrim. Even if you only skimmed through the post, you should have been able to realize that. lachen.gif

You say BF3 is better looking than Crysis and raised the bar, now that could bring up a worthy discussion that fits perfectly in this thread. If only you could come up with some examples aside from texture quality, which I've already countered. rolleyes.gif

Crysis 3 upped it in tight corridor spaces.

Modded skyrim, but its engine is poor, so doesnt count imo

BF3 have some REALLY bad textures in many cases, many of which are also pixelated up close. (not face flat onto the texture)

Anyway most realistic looking game imo is Arma 2 in some cases.
@ boredgunner Dude, what don't you understand about the significant role texture quality plays in overall visual fidelity? It's almost as if you're belittling the importance of texture work and jumping straight to technicalities in order to justify your argument. What good are advanced effects like real time GI, post processing, SSAO, etc., if a game has sub- par texture work?
Quote:
MaLDo 4.0 is a Crysis 2 texture pack.

I never said other wise.doh.gif And still, his textures crap all over 99% of professionally produced texture work from AAA dev studios. I don't care if it's a texture pack, it's possible to play the game this way, and the game is still relevant in graphics discussions, then why not mention it? I don't recall OP specifying 'vanilla" games only. Crysis 2 pre-MaLDo looked average (or even bad according to many). His mod demonstrates that high quality textures can make an average looking game, look 'mind blowing'.
Quote:

I'm not going to do that because it's a discussion that's already been done to death in this forum. On a tech level, Crysis has things it does better, and BF3 has things it does better. The common gamer who isn't privy to graphical technicalities won't even notice every technical effect in a game, before they see the more readily apparent things like textures, art direction, etc.

Secondly, I don't pretend to have advanced insight into all of the technicalities surrounding computer graphics, so I can only speak on what's most apparent to me, as a layman, and imo, BF3, along with a handful of other games, are more visually impressive than C1. You don't have to agree me with me, just as I don''t agree with you. I'll leave it at that.
