What games upped the graphics bar this last 2 years - Page 5

Now that Metro Last Light is out, no one is going to vouch for that? I have not played it yet, I am waiting on 780 GTX to come out for my new build. BTW, why is it I keep seeing ppl post on OCN about Titan this Titan that when all benchmarks I've seen show the same-priced GTX 690 beat it?

Yeah like I said, if Crysis 3 wasn't out already then Metro: Last Light would have been the first game to raise the graphics bar (by my definition) since Crysis. Every aspect of it looks great, and what makes it raise the bar is the common use of tessellation which is what really makes the game look realistic up close.

Titan is a single core card unlike 690 which is a dual GPU. Titan is roughly 30% faster than 680GTX but it's way overpriced IMO. If I was buying a card right now (without 700 series being around the corner) I'd get 690 any day.

On topic, Crysis 3 looks bloody amazing to say the least.

Well, given the choice to QUAD-SLI with two GTX 690 or SLI with two GTX TITANs, for the same price, the TITANs are the better choice. They give an average higher performance due to driver issues with 3-SLI and 4-SLI. And, for double the price, 4 GTX TITANs are unbeatable in benchmarks, specially at high resolutions.

On topic, yeah, I also agree Crysis 3 is way up there. Metro LL also looks amazing, and takes the second place on my book, but it´s not really that big of a leap from Metro 2033.

Other games that upped the bar are Witcher 2 and Tomb Raider 2013.

Metro Last Light's graphics are a big leap from 2033. Go back and play 2033 and you'll probably be surprised (as I was) to see that it actually looks dated. It's a very mediocre looking game at its core, but with advanced post-processing slapped on top of it to mask the blandness. Whereas Last Light looks incredible and everything is considerably improved, even the post-processing.

The Witcher 2 on the other hand raised no bar; it's a great looking game but brought nothing new in terms of graphics tech. It has above average texture quality, decent bump maps, pretty good vegetation if I recall correctly, and very good character models, but it doesn't even use ambient occlusion. Overall polygon count, object detail, and post-processing were nothing special, some older games used more advanced features to produce better graphics (namely Crysis and Crysis Warhead). Also let's not forget the horrible pop-in/grass draw distance in The Witcher 2.

Crikey - far cry 3 crysis 3 assassins 3, anything with 3 on the end.

This is a statement for an HD7970 as well! I am talking about ultra settings here, mssa4 etc

1 card at 1080p is almost doomed! Even Titan has to puff really hard thumb.gif
post #49 of 63
Crysis 3, Metro LL, Max Payne 3

Far cry 3 in my opinion looks good, but not even close comparing to the games mentioned above

FEZ,

raised 2D 8-bit graphics standard in 2013

ohh and planetside 2's lighting and draw is amazing, but the textures are generally very weak
