Mid-Range GPU Upgrade

post #1 of 54
Thread Starter
Hey guys,
I'm going to be getting some money next week and i was wondering what you guys thought would be a worthwhile upgrade. I've currently got a ASUS GTX550Ti running at stock and it runs the games i usually play fairly well on high sometime ultra (BF3, GTA, SC2, Fallout) I'm pretty much looking for something that will give a bit more power without being a pointless upgrade rolleyes.gif I have a budget of around 150GBP and i plan to buy a XFX 450/550w PSU as well.

Any ideas? Someone i know told me a Sapphire HD7850 2GB would be worth it but when it comes to GPU's i don't have much of a clue tongue.gif

So what is your total budget for the GPU?
You could run 2 550ti's in crossfire.

The 7850 would be a very noticeable upgrade, but if you can stretch your budget to ~180£ the 7870 xt would be even better.

The budget for the card is like £150GBP, but im up for it to go higher provided the upgrade is worth it and reasonable. Is the Sapphire 7870XT equivalent to something like XFX's 7870OC?

No the 7870xt uses the 79XX architecture and is just slightly slower then a 7950. Very worthy upgrade.
PS: NEVER BUY AN XFX,
XFX = fighter jet,
Stock Cooler with fan on the right = Beside Fighter Jet... as it goes supersonic... in an underground parking garage.

Nope, The 7870XT is a cut down 7950 and better than the 7870OC, supposedly a great overclocker and should run cooler, the 7000 series from XFX isn't very good

Edit:
Basically what ADHDadditiv said

Ah that sounds about right, as i've heard alot about Sapphire cards being pretty decent mid-rangers and nothing about XFX's. Sapphire say the XT needs to have 500w PSU as a minimum, and i've got a Powercool 650w one right now. Do you think its worth keeping that one or playing safe and getting a XFX 550w one for around £52?

WOAH Powercool, get that thing outta your system bro, you gunna catch it on fire! Get the XFX one, the 7870xt shouldnt need a 550w, especially considering my GTX 670 barely needs a 500W, including the oc on my i5 and the gpu.

Ha! Thought you'd say that, its the reason why i'm changing almost everything since i got this built for me by a company in London...worst. decision. ever! So you think a 450w might be alright, considering my CPU is OC'ed?
