680 Problems

Thread Starter
I posted a similar thread about a week ago, so sorry for the repetition. I think the problem may be worse than I thought. I have noticed shadows flicker in a few of my games (BF3 and M&M Heroes VI). It is mostly (almost exclusively) tree shadows. I am at work at the moment, but I may post a picture or video to show exactly what I'm talking about. Basically the flicker looks almost as if the shadows alone are at a lower FPS. It may simply be that the trees/leaves are constantly moving in the wind, and, therefore, making the shadow appear to be flickering. I have also noticed a few artifacts/bugs in BF3. They look like a glitchy texture and are always in the exact same spot. For example, on this particular map a small part of the hand rail glitches and I can always go to that spot and find it.

Also I found it strange that during a furmark test my card runs at 130% power, but during a game it only runs at 80% power. Both situation use the same voltage and the same clock/memory speed, and during both the GPU usage is 100%.

I have tested underclocking my card by A LOT and I still get those shadow problems. Any ideas of what could be happening? Is it worth RMAing my card, or does all this sound normal?

It could be drivers. What version are you on?

It also can be temperature issues. Think you can monitor your temps in game?

Do the shadows act like this in every game or just BF3 & Might? (BF3 btw is notorious for making people think something is wrong with their machine.) You think you can get us a picture of the problem?

RMAing is always an option but it is best as a last resort, for both you and companies.

Thank you for your reply. According to precision x, the highest temp I get after hours of playing is 59c. Furmark, on the other hand, gets up to 75c (guess because it uses a lot more power). I am running 314.22 as far as the driver ( I have done a clean reinstall recently). I will be at work for a few more hour, but I will try to upload a picture when I get home tonight. I only really play BF3 and I tried Might for the first time last night and noticed the shadows. I will try Civ5 and Diablo 3 when I get home and see if I see the same thing. Again, thank you for trying to help. I feel kind of alone with this problem and googling doesn't give me any solid solutions.

Just tested SC2, Civ5, and D3. All shadows/textures look perfect. Unfortunately I do not have skyrim.

I took a couple pics to illustrate what I am talking about. The flickering, unfortunately, cannot be captured in a picture. However, I have a pic of one of the glitches I am referring to and a shadow that looks wrong to me.

This is thew glitch.

This is a bad texture shadow.

Also, I thought I should add, the flickering shadows are only on objects in motion. Stationary object shadows never flicker.

I am not quite sure I am seeing any problems. Obviously I wouldn't see flicker of course in a static image.

I am on the same drivers and I don't notice any particular flickering but I just got my 690s yesterday. If it is mainly BF3 and thats your only issue, I would say you are lucky.

An occasional hiccup once in a while is to be expected but many people have an issue with BF3.

You said M&M was glitchy is that still the case?

The first picture where the rail meets the stucco. That spot flickers and the textures change as I move left and right.

M&M still has glitchy shadows and occasionally I will see a few white dots at the bottom edge of the screen. If I zoom in on the leaves of the trees I can see each leaf change color every 1/2 second. The color will basically go from normal to a little darker to a little darker to a little lighter to lighter to normal again (sorry if that doesnt make sense) and is not fluid.

The shadow problem is most prominent in M&M. It looks like I have a low refresh rate, but only with the shadows. If I enter a cave or anything other than trees the shadows are fine.

Oh and congrats on 690s!

Thanks, and I see what you mean now. That doesn't look like good level design to me, two over lapping objects rather than being cut or properly measured. Happens all the time in Level Design. That will flicker a lot too, stuff like that drives me nuts.

I would say if these are your only two issues to submit a bug report to nVidia. See what they say. I honestly think the BF3 is working as intended. Might does sound like it may need a driver tweak. It could also be a variety of things, do you have any forced AA in control panel or all your in game settings all you use?

That is just my personal opinion.

Other than adaptive vsync everything is in game controlled as far as I know. I have not touched anything other than vsync in the nvidia control panel. So would you rule out a physical problem with the card?

As far as the power consumption I mentioned before, why would the GPU only use 80% power in a game and 130% in furmark when the voltage/GPU usage/speed is the same during use?
