What am I missing? First WC Loop

Thread Starter
Hey OCN:

I'm about to hit the check-out button at performance-pcs.com to purchase my first WC loop. I want to start with a CPU only loop. Ultimately, I want a haswell build in a case labs case, but today will be CPU only. If I WC my 680s it'll be a complete second loop anyway.

I really like the look of the tube reservoirs, so I am going to get the aquacomputer aqualis res, with pump adapter and an alphacool vpp655 d5 pump.

I have the HAF 932 so I will setup a 360 RAD at the top with 3 AP-15s.

What do you think about my build? What am I missing? any recommendations?

Thanks,

LEAD Technologies Inc. V1.01

That looks ok. I would personally get an extra fitting so you can have a fill port. In the future I would consiter a drain port as well. trust me the fill port is helpfull. Trying to wedge a funnel or something into the top hole of your res isnt fun. Good luck, you will like the temps you get from water thumb.gif

Thanks a lot!

I will add a fill port. Any suggestions on a good one? Also, what if I bought 3 QDCs and to add 2 to the bottom of the loop? Would that work? Is Koolance the only decent ones?

From what I understand, QDC's restrict flow, and adding that many would probably impede the performance of your loop substantially. While they are indeed convenient, for absolute performance, I'd suggest just adding a drain port. You wont use it too much, but when you do, you'll be glad you put it in there. It's worth the hassle.

drain port is more important that fill port imo. id strongly suggest in investing in a drain valve or a quick disconnect fitting. if you're going to be using distilled water in your loop, get a kill coil or biocide

I've made some adjustments to my build. I will definitely purchase a drain port. I am having a hard time picturing what connectors I will need. Is it best to purchase all of the key components first and then see what type of connectors you need (ie, elbows, rotaries, etc.) or am I best to just buy standard straight compression fittings?

It's all very overwhelming!

trust me, i think most of us who have done watercooling have always been short of something to complete their loop. the first thing is to examine your case, create or sketch a layout on how you would like to create your loop, research what you want, and see if those items will be compatible with your case. i think your first order should be the main components like the rads, blocks, and essentials such as tubing and maybe reservoir, but since your going for a 150mm tube, you should be fine. from there, you should have a clearer understanding of what type of fittings you will need to accomplish your layout. still, you always want to get extra fittings just in case...

I am in the process of doing my first build. Thing I didn't get enough of was the fittings. It mainly was because where I thought my pump/res would fit it didn't so I had to change the position. If you don't mind the postage costs/postage time you could always order what you have. Start the build and order anything you forgot later.

I agree with everything said about the drain. If you are doing regular maintenance it would probably help a bit. A fill line can also be helpful if the port to fill the res is in a tight place. Can be as simple as a barb and tubing (which is what I did)

Go with the drain over the QDCs. A T-block with a mini-valve connected somewhere at the lowest point in your loop should work. At least that's my plan for the build I'm working on
