Questions About Clock vs. Clock

Thread Starter
I read on this forum somewhere that the equivalent of 1Mhz from Intel is 1.8Mhz from AMD.

1- What does that mean?

2- Is it because Intel is more efficient?

3- If true does that mean that AMD CPU's run hotter than Intel CPU's?

Thanks thumb.gif

I don't know if those numbers are correct, I saw the post you're talking about but I think that was just a random number he came up with for argument's sake.

1. A modern Intel CPU will perform more operations per clock cycle, meaning if you take a modern Intel CPU and a modern AMD CPU and clock them to the exact same frequency and try to keep as many factors in the systems the same, the Intel CPU is faster.

2. Efficiency is one thing that comes into play. Both companies use very different architectures for their chips so you can't make a direct comparison and point out one thing saying "THIS is why the Intel chip is faster".

3. To be honest I'm not sure if they do. Logically I'd say yes because AMD chips use higher voltage but I'm not sure this is actually the case, or if you can even properly make this comparison since the chips are so different.

Amd lacks most in single threaded apps, and the yt? emps typically are lower on amd chips becuase the max temps are usually safe around 60c for most amd chips and itel chips are safe usually upto 80c depending. I had a amd fx8120@4.5 55c max and a 2600k @4.5 in the low 70's only different components was motherboard and cpu. Just to give you an example
post #5 of 9
yteah i think someone just threw some numbers out there, i mean 1MHz = 1.8MHz is ridculus if the same GEN (maybe old GEN vs latest GEN it might have some truth) and that is like a 7200MHz AMD chip = a 4000MHz Intel chip tongue.gif

Generally, a 4.5GHz AMD will be up there with a 4.0GHz Intel, but AMD overclock further into the high 4's and low 5's, so the gap is ceased

1- What does that mean?

Intel CPU's can complete more Instructions per cycle so have a higher IPC. In simpler terms this means Intel CPU's can achieve more in 1 cycle than AMD. Therefore to make things "even" you would need the AMD CPU to be faster (this is a very simplified explanation).

2- Is it because Intel is more efficient?

Yes as above

3- If true does that mean that AMD CPU's run hotter than Intel CPU's?

AMD CPU's consume more power, generally higher power consumption means more heat to deal with though this can be skewed by the fact current Intel CPU's have a smaller die size which also can equal more heat. Running "hot" is pretty irrelevant as long as you are within the max temp it can deal with and have adequate cooling.
Quote:

That's not really right. A 4GHz 3770k is still going to wipe the floor with a 4.5GHz 8350 in many things (particularly single thread). The overclocking argument shouldn't be used as saying if you OC the 8350 to 5.0GHz you are basing the assumption that the 8350 can achieve that speed stable and more importantly you are ignoring the fact that the Intel CPU may clock pretty close to 5.0GHz as well. When you allow for that with both OC'd the gap doesn't cease (in some cases it may increase in Intels favour).

Of course the AMD CPU's are considerably cheaper which means for many builders you can get a cheaper CPU and have more cash for the GPU (which matters if gaming) or things like SSD's.

The 1.8 number could be from looking at StarCraft 2 FPS numbers. Those are particularly good on Intel. I don't think there's anything else that's as bad as that when comparing programs and games. Making it worse is the fact that even today SC2 actually manages to get low FPS when you need it most, when the screen is filled with units and a battle starts and you need to click around and use spells. So for SC2 the comparison actually matters. Despite it being such an old game, it's still not the usual useless comparison between 150 and 300 fps like in other games. It's actually about 15 fps compared to 30 fps.

I'm actually pretty annoyed with the Blizzard programmers that designed that engine. I'd have liked to play around with an AMD build and this was pretty much the only thing that made buying it not justifiable for me.
