to remove the advantage of KB/mouse from a controller, you have to amputate one arm biggrin.gif

i don't doubt some of you can stomp on me using your k/m there are other controller users that can stomp me also. (i'm not a god at video games)
this entire convo stems from talking about wanting to use my controller to swap over from console. every last pc gamer said, pretty much the same thing, "it wouldnt even be worth playing because you'll struggle to even get one kill" type of talk.

who might this post help, people like myself that used to only game on console and dont want to use k/m and try to get good with using them.
also to show that just because you think that k/m is the only way to play, its not, and to help some people off of their high horse. wink.gif

I am curious why you are against using a k/m setup? It takes a day or two to get used to and once you learn it you'll fall in love. These threads come up all the time, and I really wish someone would explain why they prefer a controller? I understand comfort, but it should be obvious that you can become just as comfortable with k/m.

To your first bold, even if you were a god at games, most of us would still stomp you because you are using an inferior interface. This is has been proven.

Microsoft did tests (for the game Shadowrun I believe), pitting average/poor pc k/m users against the best of the best controller users. The k/m people won, but the thing was they didn't just barely win, it was no contest domination. The controller users never won a single round or even came close.

To your second bold, use a controller by all means. But don't pretend like compares. If you are having fun playing sp cod on the couch with your controller and gaming pc, more power to you.

I just don't know why people want to use an obviously lesser interface. It's like comparing texting on a touch screen with an actual keyboard, they both work, but the keyboard is significantly easier to use.

Yea.... despite how good you may feel you are with a controller, it's simply not possible to compete with a good mouse+keyboard player. There's simply much, much, MUCH more precision in a mouse and keyboard, meaning faster aiming, better accuracy, and so on. You may be doing well, and that's fine; but against a 'pro' level PC gamer, any controller use would get dominated in an FPS game. Take Counter Strike as an example. I play PC exclusively, and I'm still not sure how they do 90% of the stuff they do.

In my opinion its like taking the harder to use character in a game, he's harder to use but is far superior if you know how to use him well. That would represent keyboard + Mouse . Then there is the easier character to use, which takes much less learning to get used to and you can still perform well with it. But if you took the best person able to play with the easier to use character against the best person using the harder to use character... The harder to use character would win as it has advantages you can use if you know how to... just my 2 cents ...

Thread Starter
just an update, i dont plan on using a controller full time, its just that my mouse is so erratic (microsoft arc) http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Arc-Touch-Mouse-Black/dp/B009CP4PIW/
there is no worse mouse out there.
so playing with that, i might as well just jump into the game and leave the house.. would be less frustrating.

The only time I see this question come up is from console players who do not want to change. for me comparing them is like comparing a security camera controlled with a joystick and a security guard standing next to it. you push the controller in a direction and the camera moves at a set speed(slow), the guard just looks(fast)thumb.gif

Yep, and mouse and keyboard has a lot of other concrete advantages such as hotkeys (mostly for RPGs), and just all the extra keys allow you to play games that wouldn't work on a controller without heavy compromise (RTS, ArmA games). Reliability is another benefit, controllers are all cheap crappy parts that wear down unlike good mice and mechanical keyboards. The only benefits a controller has are cost, and pressure sensitive buttons or triggers so you can actually control your throttle in vehicles. Which brings us to...

Yep, and joystick for air vehicles. If I wasn't too cheap for a wheel, I'd never use a controller. thumb.gif

I really don't see what all the fuss is about. Sure a mouse is faster and more precise for aiming with but as long as one can competently aim and shoot, and is having fun, that is all that matters. thumb.gif

Quote:
I just don't know why people want to use an obviously lesser interface.

A; Comfort.

B: I don't have the dexterity of a pianist.

C: Because I can competently aim with a control pad seems I've used one exclusively since they've been available on a PC.

D: Wireless control pad > wireless keyboard and mouse in your living room on your 60" HDTV with full 7.1 surround sound while chilled out on the sofa.

E: Because I can.

That is all (until further notice). thumb.gif
