4870 no video output

Thread Starter
My 4870 decided to quit yesterday. Everything was working fine and then the screen turned white and the mouse turned into a black square. I shut the machine off and found that the 4870 was not outputting a signal anymore.

I popped a pci card in there and booted into windows and here is what GPU-Z says:

I also tried reflashing the bios and it did not help anything. I tried it in another machine and it has the same problem. My old 9600gt works fine in both.

The previous owner had put a Accelero Twin Turbo on it and did not put any heatsinks on the VRM's, so they were reaching 110c or higher . I put a custom heatsink on them and it dropped them down to about 85c with Furmark. I'm guessing one finally decided to die and maybe fried the GPU.

Any suggestions or other things to try? Thanks.

Looks dead, no smell of burned plastic? I would remove the heatsink and look for any damaged parts just to be sure.

No smells. I did that and everything looks fine. No popped transistors, caps, or burned chips. The card still gets warm like it normally would where the gpu and vrms are.

Does the 4870 have more than 1 output to try? That would be my last hope seeing as how the other card works

Yeah, I already had two monitors hooked up to it though.

Yeah, I may try that. I baked my 4850x2 a few times without luck.

I replaced my thermal paste on the gpu and the tape on the vrms a few days ago.. I have a feeling that something may have shorted out or maybe I tightened the screws on the HS too much.. Everything looked fine but who knows. redface.gif I've done it before and never had any problems

For now, I'm going to be looking out for a good deal on a 660ti. About time to upgrade anyway. thumb.gif

Plugged in the 4870 as a test today and after a few tries a flame shot out of the back of the board. One of the vrms exploded. Now at least I know what was wrong with it. smile.gif

wow, i guess that does give you a reason to upgrade. i would look at a 7870 XT tahiti LE card. built on a light version of the 7950/7970 Tahiti chip. 300 approx more shaders than regular 7870's and OC'd can put it into 7950 teritory amking it one of the best perf/$$ cards on the market

Yeah, I may do something like that when I'm ready to upgrade my cpu/mobo/ram. I ended up getting a GTX 470 for about $70. It'll do the job for now. smile.gif
