OCN best game component award

Thread Starter
if a mod can pick this up and run with it it would be great.

The concept of this award is to identify the "components" of games that are in a class of its own. for example. as far as raid content, I don't believe any game has come close to everquest1 in scale and intricacy of the raid system. to bring a group of highly intelligent and motivated gamers together for hours at a time just to try to accomplish a single task. THAT IMO is the best that a MMO can offer in terms of gameplay.

it has been suggested that the crafting system in SW Galaxies is among the best ever designed. most of us can agree that blizzard puts out some of the best cinematic of any game produced in its era. heck. if you go back and watch the vid of D2 cinamatics, it's STILL better then alot of the games today biggrin.gif

so.. I guess this is an analysis of WHAT bits of pieces of game content are the best. even the parts that you don't normally see but only realize it after you play something else that makes you realize just how good something was. after years of online gaming, i've come to realize that everquest1 had THE most robust network protocol ever programmed. at 1st I cursed their network code blaming it for every little hiccup in the game, but after seeing game after game fail HARD on that vary thing, I realized that they REALLY got the network code figured out solid.

you don't have to LIKE the game as a whole, but often there are aspects of the game you REALLY enjoy and felt it was a shame that feature should have been put into a better game biggrin.gif i mean how many times have you been suckered into a game with tons of bling just to find out it had no gameplay biggrin.gif what aspects of what game should be highlighted and elevated to industry standard?

so... what bits and pieces of games do you guys feel should be recognized? what categories should there be?

nominate away:

personally i nominate EQ1's raid system as well as network protocol code. I've personally been in LARGE raids and can attest that no other game comes close in their ability to handle large scale combat as smoothly as EQ1 did. ARMA2 comes close, but it's nowhere as chaotic as an EQ1 raid biggrin.gif
