[ScienceDaily]New Device Can Extract Human DNA With Full Genetic Data in Minutes

Quote:
Conventional methods use a centrifuge to spin and separate DNA molecules or strain them from a fluid sample with a micro-filter, but these processes take 20 to 30 minutes to complete and can require excessive toxic chemicals.

UW engineers designed microscopic probes that dip into a fluid sample -- saliva, sputum or blood -- and apply an electric field within the liquid. That draws particles to concentrate around the surface of the tiny probe. Larger particles hit the tip and swerve away, but DNA-sized molecules stick to the probe and are trapped on the surface. It takes two or three minutes to separate and purify DNA using this technology.

"This simple process removes all the steps of conventional methods," Chung said.

These days we can refer to a method of DNA extraction as "conventional."

Abathur is not impressed biggrin.gif.

Pretty cool, although 20-30 minutes isn't bad either, i think price tag is a more important factor when it comes to DNA extraction.

Would be a huge benefit in cloning if all I had to do was lyse, spin and extract without any more steps. Centrifuges are also a hot commodity in the lab, I hate waiting to put a sample in! I don't know why they say the market isn't developed yet, sounds like they need an entrepreneur to explore the market space!

The key question is how much those microtips cost to manufacture. Qiagen spin columns and similar products probably cost pennies. If this product is 100 times more expensive, I'm not sure it's worth the 10x price savings.

That said, in a fully funded world, I'd love it biggrin.gif

I wonder where the point is where we will go too far. I honestly see no natural benefit in cloning.

You wouldn't want a copy of yourself in stasis, whose organs are available for harvesting when you need a replacement? rolleyes.gif

That clone would still be a living human being that deserves to be treated as such.

But, that's beside the point. You wouldn't clone the entire person just for organs, you would simply clone the organs that you need, at the time you need them.

Liver failing? Let's clone you up a new one, this time, don't drown it in booze.
Heart failing? Coming right up! Lay off the bacon covered crispy creams.
You got a pencil in your eye? How did you do that? Nevermind, new eyeball is on it's way!

I'd be willing to wager that we have to worry about cyborgs, far, far before we have to worry about a serious concern of cloning homo sapiens. It'll be here much sooner than anyone realizes, I think.

I was trying to get a reaction tongue.gif

Of course they would be humans. And that is a far better idea to clone individual organs, which seems could be possible in the future along with growing organs. thumb.gif
