Windows 98 activation

Thread Starter
As we all know, Win98 is no longer supported my MS, ever since 2006. But I'm curious, is it true that Microsoft is giving away genuine generic Windows 98 activation key, on request?

From what I understood it's supposed to work on all versions, and most importantly (like I said before), it's supposed to be perfectly genuine & approved by Microsoft themselves, which I'm finding hard to believe...

IIRC 98 doesn't activate, you just need a serial.
Activation was introduced with XP.

That is true. It does not activate at all per se, only accepts a serial code, same as 2k and before.

Yes, that would be my mistake... What I meant was serial key, what you type in during the installation procedure. Sorry...

Well, back to the OQ, I don't think they are. A quick google shows nothing. Either way it is not really an issue, as there are ways to get the keys for it should you need one (abandonware sights have them)

Well yes, I know that... But look at this article HERE
Quote:
I decided to re-post this so that if someone googles for this subject,
they will find it.
I got this key from Microsoft. They said it would work with *all*
CDs, and said, "feel free to pass this on".
I guess since they don't support it anymore, there's no reason to
keep it a secret anymore. Anyway, the generic key is:
(code removed, don't want to cause any problems until it's confirmed to be genuine)
Be sure you look closely at the letters. On my LCD monitor, it is
difficult to see the difference between the single letter W and VV,
which is two letters "V".
In the first block, VP9 is followed by two V's. The rest are W's.

I was hoping someone might know more about this... IDK, seems too good to be real, especially for Microsoft biggrin.gif

Give me a bit and I'll try that on a VM install. Like said on there, it does not sound like M$ at all, but at this point, nothing is impossible.

I know, my point exactly! But then again, who knows... Win 98 is no longer supported and it can't be obtained, bought through the official source(s). So maybe they changed their policy & decided to give it away for free? IDK...

Either way, thanks for looking into this issue. I appreciate it!

That's OK, thank you anyway... I already tested it myself, on 3 different Windows 98 installations last night... From what I can tell, this isn't a "generic" key, it's just a standard one, which seems to be legitimate (I even checked with MS phone support), and it works on all OEM installations! (not retail, though)

But it's not given by Microsoft, like that guy claims... At least that's what my local MS support told me... I also tweeted MS support on Twitter, but they didn't answer me back, so I'm guessing this is fake.
