AMD A10 5800K with a HD 6950 or HD 6970 --has anyone done this?

I'm trying to install my HD6950 so that it will work with my AMD a10 5800k.

I read elsewhere where references were made, that you can use a 6950 or 6970 with the a10 5800k .....but I can't find anything where someone discussed actually setting up a 6950 or 6970....and it worked properly

Has anyone here successfully set it up? I need a big hand in figuring this out.

It should be like using any other APU combo. If you are worried, disable the APU's graphics in the BIOS.

If you are implying it in a sense where you are setting up as a hybrid crossfire, then no, just no. thumb.gif Otherwise, as as a typical gpu it will work fine.

Not the answer you are looking for but my understanding was that this was not possible...

I believe the 6670 is the card to use with that. However I have also read that all southern island based cards will work but I do not think that is true.

Either way if it did work you would just follow the same steps as you would for the 6670 or 6650.

I realize you cant crossfire a 6950 with a 7660D.

I just want to set it up, so that I can run the monitor cable out of the 6950 and use it as my primary GPU for gaming.

The way I have done it so far, my 6950 shows up (in device manager as working properly, same as the 7660D) but I can only run the monitor VGA cable out of the motherboard and I'm not seeing any performance gains when I run 3D Mark.

If I run a HDMI cable from the 6950 the the HDMI port on the monitor, I just get a black screen.

Also I don't have any option to disable the APU's graphics in the BIOS. I tried to disable it in device manager but then just get a black screen. If I pull the 6950 and reboot...the 7660D reactivates itself again.

I have read references to people doing it with a 6950 or 6970...but with the understanding that it wont crossfire, which it would if you install a 6570 or 6670. As a side note...I also just read an article showing you can crossfire a 7850 with it as well. ...but the 6950 just wont be able to crossfire.

OH

I completely misunderstood you... and just like people getting NVIDIA cards to run PHYSX while using an AMD card as the main card it would not surprise me if people got things working.

But I read about it before and I did a little digging before posting and I really couldn't find anything on a work-around.

Do you have a link for the info on the 7850 because maybe whatever they did to get that to work will work for you.

What motherboard do you have BTW...

so with a little trick we can manage to CF the APU GPU with a HD7850? have AMD announce if the new one 6800k will be able to do it with no tricks?

Are you asking me? Because I am not the one who said that... I was asking if he had a link... I would be interested in seeing what they did to get it to work. I don't see why it would work.

Its true that even though guys claim to have installed cards which dont crossfire, you cant find a "how to do it" reference anywhere on the internet. One guy said he has done it several times but with no explanation.

Anyway...Here is the link to page 3 of the October 2012 article, where they used a CLUB HD 7850 royalQueen (Poker Series) GPU. They use it but don't get into any detail about the install.

I'm guessing this might be a GPU sold in the United Kingdom based on the name. I also see a 2GB version listed on the ever popular auction site right now and it out of the UK . I suppose if one 7850 works, others will too.

It's interesting that AMD is not getting the word out there so people know the 7850 will work with their A10 5800K. Maybe they will announce the compatibility when they release their newest GPU in June.

http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviews/1583/pg4/amd-a10-5800k-apu-performance-review-club-3d-7850-royalqueen.html

Here is where they do some tests, but it looks like they are not cross-firing it..yet I'm pretty new to this stuff, so you guys can figure it out based on what you see.

http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviews/1583/pg10/amd-a10-5800k-apu-performance-review-gaming-performance-7850.html

What initially drew my attention to this article, is that I have the same A10 5800K and motherboard that they used for the combination --- ASUS F2A85-V PRO

Then upon some further digging I found the approved list of graphics cards that will work (not in crossfire mode) with the A10 5800K and sure enough the HD 6950 2GB was on the list...so it can be done.
