Upgrading to 7970's.

Thread Starter
Hello everybody! I currently have a good 7950 card in my build but I eventually want to have two Crossfired 7970's. I know that if I Crossfire a 7950 and a 7970 the 7970 would be bottlenecked by the 7950 but would that be better then running a single 7970 until I got another one? And would it hurt the 7970 in any way to be bottlenecked like that? I don't know too much about Crossfire rules so sorry if this question makes me look like an idiot wink.gif.

I would just get a second 7950, if you already have one. It isnt worth the extra cost, especially when you already have one 7950.

It depends what you game at ? If you game at 1920 x 1080 get another 7950 if you game at more than that get a 7970 only if you plan to get another down the road.

Hi, I have two HD 7970s in Crossfire and I'll just tell you now that you're better off with 7950s in CF. The performance difference is only ~5% give or take at the cost of an extra $100, and the HD 7950 even beats the HD 7970 in Civilisation V.

If I were you, I wouldn't even bother with getting another 7950 and just save up to swap out for two 8970s when they are released. The only reason I spent an extra $200 on the HD 7970s are because I think that number is sexy rolleyes.gif, else would have gone for 2x HD 7950s and overclocked them.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I knew the difference between the 50 and 70 wasn't THAT great but I didn't know it was that small smile.gif.

I think I will do exactly that and wait to get some of the 8xxx series when they come out. Seeing as though AMD has said that their 8xxx series will be released at the end of 2013. Thanks!
