Please: Legal answers only concerning household monitoring software. - Page 3

Thread Starter
I thought I should make this it's own post not to be confused with anyone's quotations.

I had not expected this thread to take a turn as it did, nor did I expect so many people to post. Though since we are on the subject of illegal activity, let this hypothetical question be played out.

Now imagine yourself in this situation regardless of it's plausibility. Someone in your household: a roommate, a child, spouse, friend, maybe a neighbor etc. has access to your computer or your network. They do said illegal activity: (Insert here) i.e. For this example we will use Piracy. Piracy is illegal in all forums regardless of whether you have already purchased a legal copy of said item. (This is argued to good reason but is still illegal. *Hence DRM can be a good thing at times.*) Now someone who has access to your device(s) is pirating music, software, games, movies, books, etc. -- whatever it maybe -- (insert here). It is not illegal to monitor your equipment, domain, network, place of authority, etc. etc. So for anyone that says that this is illegal, or that is illegal -- it all comes down to the perspective of the situation, i.e. the scope. Now without getting into too much detail about the Communications Decency Act, it roughly says that ". . . you can not be legally held or deemed legally liable if other parties use or access your devices for malicious or illegal intent. . . ." That being said, you ARE responsible for monitoring what other people do on your equipment. Though you might be arrested and taken to court, 95% of the time you will be released without positive grounds. That's not to say that you won't be forced to court hearings and other erroneous situations.

I hope his clears up a great bit on what people declare right and or wrong in the scope of things presented when discussing such topics. Yes Overclock.net is a friendly and fun place to just hang out and be nerds at; it also is a place where responsible and mature adults and come together and discuss issues that are prevalent to life's many situations. Any questions?

I have family members without going into detail who have been doing things outside the scope of marriage so to speak.

Piracy though has nothing to do with your spouse cheating on you. He/she may be signing up to every internet dating site on the web.... its not illegal (don't confuse morals and laws unless you live in Iran your spouse can cheat all he/she/it likes), you spying on them however may well be illegal, especially if its your wife/husband/inter-species life partner as a court may view that internet connection as much their property as yours pretty much killing off any lame argument you have about being able to monitor "your" connection.

Man up and confront the person if you think they are lying toss them to the kerb your current plan of action is just creepy/worrying.

Thanks for reading the above post. If you had read clearly then you would have noticed such an action had taken place. Furthermore the post you incorrectly quoted was in regards to a whole another topic being discussed.

Edit: though it seems I typed the incorrect grammatical use of the word, regardless: reread. My phone correctedbtw to buy if it is still cconfusing to anyone.

The topic seems to be you wanting to spy on a family member which from this

would suggest you think your spouse is cheating. Your whole piracy rant only appears after a number of posts that clearly didn't please you or worried you that they may portray you as a paranoid stalking nut-job.

If you think family members are commiting piracy and it bothers you that much just block them from connecting..... end of.

If however you think your spouse is cheating

1 - Man the Hell up and confront them. If you think they are lying either walk/toss them out or resign to a life of crying secretly in the bathroom wishing you had the balls to toss them out.

2 - Accept the fact the marriage is basically over because

a - They are cheating maybe that's them maybe you simply fail as a spouse (from this thread it seems you have issues about having to control people that's a great way to drive people away)

b - They are not cheating and you are a controlling paranoid maniac...... if this is the case your marriage won't last your next step is domestic abuse get out of there and sort your head out before you ruin peoples lives.

Option 3 "spy on their online usage" which you seem to desire is not an option, its a shady, pathetic and legally questionable act of a paranoid coward.

Personally I think your a paranoid and controlling your actions in this thread just scream that loudly across the tree tops.

Now as you certainly don't want to read this or have others read it the report post icon is the little red flag to the bottom left of this post, enjoy clicking it and the feeling of control that it gives you. As it's my day off I'm going to enjoy a nice cold one and maybe then jump on the wife after she finishes enjoying here non-spyed on internet usage.

Your opinion was not asked for so I am not sure why you insist on forcing it on people. If the goal of this post was to offend people than I think the website you are looking for is 4Chan.

www.4chan.org/

Thanks for playing. Though I will say:

maybe your looking for some type of parental control software like net nanny...
Locking them out of the network may be the best option. Though, if the party is doing illegal activities online, you could (one would assume, at least) turn them over to the proper authorities.

If you think the illegal activities are being committed by someone who has gained entry to your network that shouldn't be on it, go into your router's settings, stop broadcasting SSID... save settings, then change name and key (of course save settings again). I figure you know this already.. but just in case.

All I can say about the liar.... LEAVE... now.... it will only get worse, it will consume your sanity in the process leaving you a burned out shell... an empty husk of what and who you used to be.

Thanks haha. Actually we all sat down and had a long talk Sunday morning. Life is the best it's been in months now. Part of the problem was when I was in the infantry I developed a habit of walling off my emotions for the world. Stone Cold Killer syndrome is what we coined it. Well it turned out I had some stuff from past deployments that were holding back a positive growth flourishing between my family and I.

Why am I telling you guys this? Meh. It feels good to open up again. Hahaha! biggrin.gif Besides I wanted to put the trolls fragile hearts to rest.

I do need a good nanny program as you mentioned. That's a great idea actually. Keep the whole family from the evils of worldly things and what not. Well I'm off to study for finals. I take my last two test today.

If you guys know of any good site block programs do share. Also is there a way to track websites that might have been deleted in browser history? My wife's cousins kids are getting older and these little buggers can be sneaky!

I'm afraid I'm really not comfortable with this discussion going down on OCN. There's other tech sites out there that can help you with a question like this.

OCN is just not the site to discuss 'how can I e-spy on my cheatin' spouse'.

Sorry y'all.
