what camera are you using? because at f4.8 (which is a weird f stop btw) even on 1" sensor you should have way less DOF that close to the fan.....

unless of course i underestimated your gear/skills and you've shifted the plane of focus or focus stacked....

Nikon D3200. And you're talking to a camera amateur here buddy, I'll be honest the camera was on auto for that shot. tongue.gif So if it's "weird" to you, my apologies....I'm not even aware of what's considered weird and what's not. The photo turned out good, I'm satisfied.

Here's where I pulled the aperture from:

i think there is some strange perspective going on with some cropping. my guess is the camera locked focus in the middle maybe but still at that fstop its still a mystery how he got that much in focus without a BTS shot. i would have guessed at least f8 for that shot. i was shooting at f16 for my lightbox test shots and was using my 17-40 from like 1.5feet away at 40mm headscratch.gif

if you look close the focus does fall out extremely slowly after the edge of the top fan but yea he had to have taken the photo stepped back a little or something because the DOF wouldnt be that deep on a stack of fans if he shot right at the MFD

I find it amusing that the camera guys are so perplexed by my photo. laugher.gif
The picture was not cropped in any way. I setup the fans, grabbed the camera (which was in auto mode btw) walked up to the lightbox and snapped the pic.

EDIT: Here is the lens I was using, just in case that might answer some of your questions.

lol it was slightly perplexing. i can definitely see it better now how the photo came out like that. less of a mystery now jealoussmiley.gif just the falloff down towards the bottom is soo subtle it really gives an interesting effect. i think if the subject was something other than fans of that color the DOF would be more easily seen

You can also do this using a cooler or the bathtub (assuming you have white interiors) Setting your lights to bounce off the sides rather than shining them at the subject provides a nice soft light on the subject.

I can't find my cooler example in my photobucket, I guess I deleted it awhile back.
