HTPC acting up with 720P DTS - Page 2

Downmixing and resampling is hardly CPU-intensive. Even for something like one of these little APUs or Atoms.

How is your audio connected up by the way? Via HDMI or optical it should be able to pass through the audio bitstream direct to your AV receiver and should be no more intensive for your system than copying a file across a network.

Two things that will become quite processor intensive are either down-mixing the audio to stereo or, if windows is resampling the audio via the built in mixer. It does this so you can have multiple sound sources playing concurrently... useful if you want to listen to your music, watch youtube and have system sounds all at once but a pain in the rear if you want lossless pass-through audio as it not only uses CPU cycles but degrades the audio quality too.

You could try XBMC if not already as this can have exclusive control of your sound hardware

Was watching in XBMC when the "buffering" occured. Sound is connected via Optical cable, and is set to passthrough the audio stream. Unsure where to check is DXVA media. Only watched in VLC to see if I could recreate the issues. XBMC is setup to have 5.1 speaker setup so a 6 channel stream shouldn't be mixed at all, and the sound appears to do it's own 2 channel mixing usually, so not sure. Windows settings know the receiver can play DTS and Dolby Digital, and it has been passing them through in the past. The lights for DTS and DD change on the receiver. IDK. Maybe I'll have to get a new ITX board/cpu/graphics card for my anniversary in a month..smile.gif

You could also try switching to XBMCbuntu or any linux OS with XBMC.

I saw a drop in usage on mine when I did it as well as a few less problems. Alot of it had to do with how Windows handles some codecs and such versus Linux. Windows Also has high overhead compared to Linux.

XBMCbuntu was really easy to install and it boots right into XBMC

I Initially installed ubuntu with xbmc, but the system couldn't play anything over dvd quality. It wasn't using the built in GPU, only CPU. Trouble shooted for about a couple hours before installing win 7, and the approved AMD drivers for GPU and was able to watch most things 720P with out issue.

We'll see. I'm looking at the zotac zbox id-83U barebones. I would only need to buy ram to put in it as well, as I already have a ssd for OS.

what GPU are you using and did you install the official 'non-free' (still free but not bundled with the OS) drivers from AMD/ATI? There should be 2 ways to get them - the bleeding edge latest ones from ATI website which you'll need to install the kernel headers and run a compiler script to build the drivers for your distro or install the latest stable version from the ubuntu repository (much easier). I think the ATI ones are called 'fglrx'

Also, try a lightweight desktop like XFCE (Xbuntu for uses it by default for example) as gnome/unity can require a fair bit of resources

Ran XBMCbuntu off a flash drive last night, and it was struggling to keep up with newest AMD released drivers. Using onboard GPU to play, nothing extra.

Are you sure these files are compatible for hardware decoding?
