H80i fan orientation

Thread Starter
I'm currently using an H80i with push/pull to cool a 3770k oc'd to 4.4. It pulls air from inside the case and pushes out through the back exhaust. It idles at 27 degrees and loads at 70 degrees. I was wondering if i turn the fans around to pull/push where it pulls air from outside the case through the case vent and into the case, with a fan on the top as exhaust, is it going to help the temps any.

You SHOULD have the fans set up to pull outside air in and exhaust from fans pulling air out.

the CPU temps will be maybe 1-2 degrees maybe 3 - and in the perfect senario MAYBE close to 4 degrees C lower than as an exhaust...

that depends, mostly on how well your case can vent air, having that hot air blow into your case, is bad for your GPU and your mobo. specifically the mosfets and chipsets. if doing a push pull as exhaust you may only see a difference of 1-2 degrees, I saw a 2-3C degree difference on a H110 (2 140MM fans) on mine.

I say leave it as exhaust to keep the other components cooler, an extra degree or 2 for CPU isnt worht 3-5 degrees on the other stuff.

In most computer cases the CPU/RAM are mounted above your GPU. Also, your GPU is pulling air in from the bottom. It is almost like two different venting environments. In my comp case I have a three fans blowing in from the case cover, one is blowing directly into the GPU fan, the other is blowing across the GPU PCB, and the other is blowing directly on the mobo. My GPU is getting fresh air from outside on the bottom which it is dumping out the back of the case. My H50 has two 120mm fans, and the rad is sandwiched by them; one fan is mounted to the case pulling air in, the other is mounted to the rad on the inside of the case pulling the air through the rad into the case. We all know that hot air rises, so this heated air heads toward the top of the case where it is vented by a 90mm fan. This is a long way of showing that there is no way the air from the rad is getting to the GPU, and there is outside air blowing on the mobo and RAM.

I have 2 120's on the top as exhaust and 2 120's on the bottom as intake. The mobo temp is usually 30 degrees and the vrm (right next to the H80i) is 33 degrees. The ram however usually stays at 40-45. The ROG board has optional temp sensors which I purchased separately to monitor these 3 things. I was thinking to turn the fans around and then use a flexible tube to join the fan from the h80 to one of the exhaust fans on the top, I haven't had time to look for a tube that would fit the fan. It seems like a lot of work to save a couple degrees tho.

I reversed the fans last night and folded for about 10 hours. I used ASUS Sensor Recorder to log temps while it was running. CPU lowest: 19 degrees, Highest 55 degrees. Everything else +10 degrees. IMHO not worth the 5 degree cpu drop if everything else overheats. mad.gif
