everything max without any form of intensive hardware antialiasing (such as MSAA, SSAA, CSAA, etc)
resolution should be your native since it's your computer.
fps average should be 60 with 45 minimum. no hitches, lag, freezes, stuttering, noticeable microstuttering (such as in CFX)
oh and AF should be at 16X highest always in this day and age. also, texture filtering quality in driver should be high quality.

For me personally, it all depends on your GPU and VRAM on maxing a game balls to the walls.. some for me would be 4K at 30FPS with 2xMSAA/FXAA and AF. If that's too much then 1440p at 30FPS with 8xMSAA/FXAA and AF. In cases like Crysis 3, I would have to use 1080p..because that game destroys my GPU...lol Downsampling FTW. (if you have the horsepower)

Look at how much more badass I made Black Ops 2 at 4k.. Remember this is COD... tongue.gif

This.....Its really not even debatable. Despite what you (anyone) would consider, maxed means all settings at "MAX" including AA and any other settings. so I would say I can max it at 1080p. Max + you're res. simple.

So those with 1080p screens will never max out a game?

Since games like crysis 3 now have so many anti aliasing options, I'd consider maxed out to mean all normal settings, like shadows, to the Max (very high/ultra/extreme) and AA at the highest possible post-processing AA option, like SMAA 2x or something. I play at 1440P so often msaa, although nice, is crippling to performance, and takes too much vram.

Max to me is everything at its highest settings, some games are easy to max like BF3 with my 670's,then i would enable vsync to easy the stress on the cards, sometimes i even lower settings just so i dnt hit my vram limit especially during crysis 3,other times in games i lower the setting because you cnt tell the difference between highest res and ultra....i think if you max everything and getting atleast 40 fps minimum that can be seen as maxed too not just at 60 fps and up..

It's called "maxing out" for a reason. All in-game settings should be set to max, including AA. Resolution should be stated separately. .ini tweaks, injectors, texture packs, AA set through Inspector etc should not count for this as this would introduce far too many variables. Average FPS of 60 for smooth gameplay.

"Maxing" a game is, in my book, the highest possible settings officially avaiable in the in-game settings (i.e: no tweaking settings.txt-files or other shenanigans), while being at the highest possible resolution, that the player has avaiable.
My system as an example: I usually play at 1920x1080p at maximum settings, but with my three monitors I've actually got 5760x1080p avaiable (But with only one GPU it wouldn't be very playable). Therefore I'm not maxing my games.
So, in my opinion, the resolution, which we're playing at, is *the* variable, that decides wether or not we are maxing our games.

Personally I don't consider anti aliasing when maxing out a game because there's so many anti aliasing options to choose from, including various in-game options (dependant on the game) aswell as FXAA and SMAA Injectors (which generally don't hit performance much).

I don't consider 60FPS a standard either. I consider a consistent playable framerate as a standard and whether that be 30FPS or 60FPS really does vary by user preference.
