For me, its 1080p @ >60fps, max settings. Vsync is a matter of preference, and irrelevant if your minimum fps exceed refresh rate.

This is my opinion as well. When you max a game all the in game settings are turned up as high as they will go including AA and then the resolutions is stated. Hence the expression maxed @ 1080p. Some games have extreme forms of AA available in the settings and if thees are not used it should be stated separately like "I can max witcher 2 @ 1080p without ubersampeling ".

The FPS should be above 60 pretty much all the time though IMO some leniency can be given in the FPS as some games are going to have hiccups no mater how good the hardware.

This is ocn.. maxing a game is NOT 1080p anymore. its 1440p minimum and really 1600p is better... MAXING.. not "high enough to make console kids jealous"

Heck if it was up to me I'd say 7680 x 1600 minimum :-p

Reolution is compleatly different. Maxing is maxing.....all settings at max. I totally play on going 1440 or above this summer, but its irrelevant. Res is res, and maxing is maxing in game settings.

By that logic we should just demand everyone game in 4k and be done with it.

I see it as 1080p, highest possible in-game graphics settings, highest possible AA settings, V-Sync off, 60+FPS. thumb.gif
Kinda like me and Guild Wars 2, except I run custom shaders with Nvidia Inspector.

Nope, sorry, gotta disagree with the current leading vote. 1080p is nowhere near max (if there even is such a thing as max). AA is also a very variable option. Some games need it very badly at 1080p, others may not need it at all/definitely don't need it at 1600p. Saying AA is required to be considered "maxing out" doesn't make sense to me.

I have a 1080p screen and I typically play games at 3840x2160 (via nvidia custom resolution downsampling) if I can handle it. Probably the single best way of making PC games look as good as they possibly can.

I'm no expert but doesn't that diminish the lifespan of your monitor?

Maxing a game is simply choosing the highest possible ingame graphics settings including highest amount of AA. Then you have to specify which resolution and framerate you're getting. In case you're using less AA than the game allows or AA that isn't in the game itself (e.g. SGSSAA), you have to specify that as well.

Saying that the OCN standard is 1920x1080 or 2560x1440 will just confuse people, especially if someone with a different resolution monitor takes it for granted that people will check his sig. People with 1366x768 laptops will often say that they maxed out the game without stating a resolution because they either expect you to know what resolution based on the laptop or because they simply don't know there's a difference.

  • Whats your preferred Framerate? What is the difference between 30 and 60fps? 60 and 120fps?
  • Either is fine, it should be stated separately (e.g. "maxed, 1080p, vsync off)
  • Max ingame AA is "maxed" any lower or custom settings should be stated separately (e.g. "maxed, 1080p, vsync off, 4x SGSSAA)
  • If there's an ultra setting then high isn't maxed. That should be obvious.
  • It should be stated separately (e.g. "maxed, 1080p, vsync off, 4x SGSSAA, 54 FPS avg). It's very subjective and the minimum acceptable FPS varies with the game (RTS might require less, FPS might require more). I aim for 120+ in competitive FPS (since I currently have a 120 Hz monitor), 60 in any other casual game.

Almost any game needs AA even at those resolutions, but other than that I agree.

You can disagree all you want, 1080p is the vote because that is most COMMON gaming monitor resolution amongst gamers and OCN members.

AA does get rid of some jaggies, which on most games improves the image quality which I assume is what we want from our games. The point of AA regardless of resolution is to ensure that we are Maxing the game, pushing the game to give the best image quality.
