i7 2600k or 3770k and Ivy Bridge.

Thread Starter
I am looking at building another machine, and i already own a 2600k, i might be able to come up with enough money to get a 3770k, what i am wanting to know is if i would see a lot of difference in performance between the two cpu's. And if it is even worth the money to get a 3770k, or if i should just get a cheaper sandy bridge to put on my old p67 build that i well be hooking up to my tv and using for a media pc.

Not much difference really between IVY and SB. SB usually runs cooler and IVY runs a little more efficiently. An SB cpu clocked @4.9GHz for example will match an IVY @4.7GHz. Memory controller is better on the IVY cpu compared to SB, meaning you can get better memory overclocks with IVY. Won't mean much for what you have planned.

For a back up rig, get what ever is the best deal between the two architectures. I mean if you can get a 2500K new or used for $150, then that would be a solid choice.

Yeah i am leaning towards just moving my 2600k sandy bridge into my new build (you can see what i am planning in my sig, marked Fractal Corsair Design) with a z77 board since it will work and just getting a cheaper sandy bridge for my p67 board, since it will just be for a media pc than anything should work, even a dual core one correct.

a 4.5ghz IVY matches a 4.8ghz SB that tells you the diffference is not much really. better IMC and pci-e 3.0 for ivy though
post #5 of 11

yeah but isn't pci 3.0 just part of the mother board?

PCI-E 3.0 is coming from the cpu. But you won't need it with a GTX 660 ti. I mean you might lose 1% of your performance running pci-E 2.0.

Oh, ok thanks i did not know that, i guess we can all learn a think or two sometimes. What about the difference between a 3570k and a 2600k would that be a big step down, only reason i am asking is because the 3570k is only $219.00 on the egg, that would be a lot cheaper than getting a 3770k which is $329.00. Thanks: Mick

I'd rather have a 2600k over a 3570k. I like the threads(8 vs 4) of the 2600k which helps me in benchmarks. The 3570k is great if you only need 4 cores.
