Looking for a Headphone amp

Thread Starter
So, the local Best Buy, frys, guitar center, etc, no one carries headphone amps, so i'm looking at having to order on online.

I hate buying something sight unseen, and come to you for help.

I currently have a Koss DJ-200 (same as the 100) that I picked up for $50 ( nearly 75% off score! )

The sound is good, but just doesn't get loud enough for me.

So i'm starting to think either new ear pads, or a headphone amp.
simple headphone amp, will always be connected to my pc.
So.

Headphone amp under $50.

Go!

Damn, for under $50 you're basically only looking at the portable headphone amps from Fiio. If you're willing to spend some more, the Schiit Magni is a really great entry-level amp. It's US made and costs $100. If you're willing to buy something used you might be able to buy something in your price range, maybe check out the marketplace on Headfi.org

For portable and under $50 you're probably looking at the Fiio E6 (not entirely recommended), Fiio E11 (if you can scrounge up another $10+shipping), or a DIY option like a CMOY.

Honestly, at that price point, you should just get a new pair of headphones that are more sensitive.

I like my headphones, I just got a good deal on them, just because i only paid $50 does not mean they are cheaply made.
its also well known that these cans require an amp to bring them to their best sound.

A sub $50 amp probably won't be able to bring out the best in your headphones. Remember the old audio adage: Your audio will only sound as good as the weakest component in your setup.

Xonar DG $30

Xonar U3 (Basically the USB version of the DG) $40-50

Both of those are soundcards that have an amp that can power up to 150 ohms or so. I think at least >64 ohms. No idea if it will power it to the level you want, the U3 got my 250 Ohms headphones to medium loud.

My first amp was the livewire ha04 which I picked up at a guitar center last year. I guess they don't carry em anymore if you can't find them. It's a studio amp, but it sounded fine to me when I used it with my Beyerdynamics DT 990 Pros (250 Ohms). 4 headphone slots so you can plug multiple devices in. Cost me $50 at guitar center. There are similar ones for even cheaper, as low as ~$20 from what I've seen.

yeah, the local GC only has headphone amps that are more for studio recording use.

If you can solder, you can probably build a Cmoy for about that price using parts from Radio Shack or a kit online.
