Actually if you wanna really get technical, you're not even supposed to use an OEM copy on a machine you're building for yourself. That version is meant for people who are building PC's and selling them to 3rd parties. We don't shut down discussions on the basis of people talking about using an OEM copy on their own machine though.

Interestingly enough, the activation tool never asks, even with an OEM copy, whether the machine you've installed it to is the 'same computer' as the one it was originally activated on. Ergo, as long as you're only running the copy on 1 machine, you don't ever have to 'lie' during the process of activation of an OEM copy on a new motherboard.

Also, another thing that you don't get besides the packaging w/the OEM version is 'support'. THAT is really why it's cheaper. Support costs MS a lot of money, and OEM means they don't have to give it to you.
