New to Ubuntu - Page 2

1.fully legal, it's recomended by some of the flavours.
2.
3. 12.04.2 LTS or 13.04
4. AMD64 if your PC supports it.

Try lubuntu, xubuntu and kubuntu as well so you can see which you like most.

Should you want to get involved in making ubuntu let me know, i'm on the QA team

Thanks for the suggestion guys, appreciate it biggrin.gif but won't going 32 bit limit my RAM to less than 4gb?

PAE is Physical Address Extension. it is basically a stopgap between 32 bit and 64 bit which allows more RAM access to a 32bit OS but not to the individual programs themselves. Basically say you have 8GB of RAM installed and a 32 bit OS and you are running 3 static demand (as in the RAM demand is static) programs needing 2GB of RAM to run (so you need 6GB). The PAE system will run from RAM, while 33% of the demand will be in Swap on a native 32bit OS.

FOr reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Address_Extension

Really we will need to know what hardware is on it. You can make anything (within reason) run well on windows and GNU/Linux just the same. Linux will be easier though.

Okay thanks for clearing that up. The installation is the same right? Like burn to a disc and boot up from the DVD drive?

Yes. Same as any .iso file. download it, burn to a dvd at the slowest rotation speed supported.

You can also use a USB stick and Unetbutin (sp?), Yumi, or the like and boot from that.

Ubuntu will perform much, much better.
Also for the record, All of these question could have been answered by a little bit of google and the ubuntu website.
