No... you are wrong...
How quiet a heatsink is, is 95% about the fans. Furthermore, the NF-P12/P12/F12/F14 are not very quiet - they are good fans, but definitely not great by today's standards.
For example, the Silver Arrow is basically an identically performing heatsink, however the TY-140's are significantly quieteer than the NF-F14/P14s, so the Silver Arrows sound profile gets much, much quieter on higher fan speeds.
If you use 2 identical fans on all of the top heatsinks, the NH-D14 is second to last only to the Thermaltake Frio Extreme. The Logisys/Assassin outperforms the Nh-D14 both with it's utterly crap stock fans, and destroys it with identical fans. The Phanteks is much quieter with it's stock fans, and both with it's great stock fans and with identical fans, it's much better than the NH-D14.
High end air to AIOs is apples to oranges to me.
That's nice, but it's apples to apples to everyone else. How much cooling performance can you get per dollar. Besides the 240mm radiators and fat 120s, high end air beats closed loops. But the best closed loops, beat the best air. High end air is only a few degrees behind something like an H100, but the Nh-D14 is actually quiet a few degrees behind something like a Corsair H100i or CM 240L or LQ-320.
Now, would you rather pay $45 for an Nh-D14, or $55 for an H100? Well, at those prices they are similar values, but H100s are a little harder to find at that price, while Nh-D14s are commonly $45. It's all about value.
Just because a company slaps some fans on a heatsink, doesn't make the heatsink better, and you are just falling for marketing. It's like the Hyper 212 EVO - a total piece of garbage heatsink, throw on a jet-engine loud fan on it, rake in the money when people see reviews of the fan using stock heatsinks where it outperforms other heatsinks. You put a CM blademaster on anything, and itll perform way better, it'll also make you deaf.
The Nh-D14's fans are nothing special for it's tier and compared to modern high end heatsinks. I love noctua, and I currently own an Nh-D14, so don't get me wrong, at $43 it's an awesome heatsink even today, but I also know that my NH-D14 is worse than the Phanteks, Logisys Assassin, Silver Arrow. if anything, you need to buy better fans for the NH-D14 to compete.
