[Build Log] CM Storm Scout 2

Edit: This is a current picture of the build smile.gif

Hello everyone smile.gif This will be my first ever build log on a super small student budget aka nothing.
Right so lets just straight into this, my current system was my first build

Quite simple and again on a crazy tight budget but the time has come to evolve into something beautiful biggrin.gif
My current specs are
CPU: i5 2500k @ stock 3.30GHz
GPU: geforce gtx 560 ti windforce
PSU: Corsair GS700 (the 2011 model)
MOBO: Asus P8Z68-V LX
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8gb (two 4gb sticks)
HDD: Some 5-6 year old piece of S**T I pulled from a random pc

So as you can tell, I already attacked the case with a can of blue paint just to try and give it some life but I failed. Cheap cases will ALWAYS be cheap!
I also had to add an intake at the front of the case but had to cut a huge amount of heavy duty plastic from the faceplate (that was also shattered upon delivery when I first got it)
I somehow managed to cut the hole by only using a nail file! I more or less filed the circular holes (see in the picture) until I could crack it and get it clear.

Anyways thats all old stuff and I'm starting to lack in the power section yet again but she did me well biggrin.gif
I have most parts ordered and are being delivered as we speak! I will be adding small things to this build over the summer as I scrape some spare cash together.
I have the following on the way
CM Storm Scout 2 (non advanced sadly they are FAR to expensive here in Ireland)
Seagate 2TB Barracuda 6Gb/s 64MB 7200RPM
Sandisk 128GB Ultra Plus SATA 6Gb/s
Corsair H100i

The most lacking thing in my system at the moment is hands down the joke of a hdd I am currently using. Im also not a heavy pc gamer so my graphics card is fine for now but I have to get my hands on something new and shiny and again I'm a 20 year old student on a tight budget because I have to eat redface.gif

Very excited to get this build up and running and literally cant wait until I get the new parts.
I also know that the H100i wont fit in the CM Storm Scout 2 with a push pull effect (thanks to you guys here on the forums) so I have decided to mount the rad outside of the case and have the stock fans inside pushing air through. In the close future I will be getting better fans and once I get the measurements between the rad and the handle on the case I might try to find some low profile fans.

I am looking into building a small simple acrylic fake floor/ psu and hdd bay cover thing. I have NO idea what these are called so if someone wants to let me know that would be cool tongue.gif
Sourced a company here in Ireland that will supply + cut the acrylic for an INSANELY cheap price! (something like €1.80 including postage in Ireland)

Just a quick mock up of what it might be covering but I have to check what space I will be working with when I get the case

Im also not set on what colour/ design or even if I should do any on the acrylic.

So thats it at this stage, just some plans with parts on the way!
Any advice/ links on the psu and hdd bay covers would be very much appreciated smile.gif

A little update on this.
My case, hdd's and h100i are all ready to leave the UK and I just made an order of a 24pin and 8pin extension cable! Im also ordered white and red cable sleeving and of course black heat shrink biggrin.gif
Im going to order the acrylic sheet for the psu/ bay covers when I get the correct dimensions of the case!
All in all, I should have enough parts to start this build HOPEFULLY by the 16th smile.gif

Ok I just picked up some cheap 120mm Evo labs red led fans today! Preferably I wanted something acutally good proformance wise but Im on a dam tight budget
Picked all three fans up for €10 in total so I'm happy about that (I know they are pretty dam cheap online)

Dam bright led's in these bad boys tho and they will really pop inside the case!

Now onto where my parts are. The hdd's and the H100i is either still in the port ready for export to Ireland or lost in Narnia (I hope not) and my case JUST got into Ireland and I should HOPEFULLY have it by tomorrow biggrin.gif

Quick question if anyone has any idea about these things, the EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti backplate. Will this fit onto my current graphics card and not kill it or should I look into something different?

I have the geforce gtx 560 non ti windforce edition graphics card by the way.

I got my case and parts today! biggrin.gif I'm really dam excited to start this build but I feel horrible right now so I'm gonna have a quick nap and when I wake up I'm going to attack this at full force!

Ok so lets get this started and sorry for this HUGE post!
So after I stripped the CM Storm Scout down I threw in the H100i first because I wanted to find out the amount of clearance between the rad and the handle on the top of the case.

So after I fitted the H100i in I added the rest of the fans and the mobo (I ran the computer for a night without the H100i fully set up because I had nothing to remove the thermal paste on the cpu)

I said it before and I will say it again, cheap cases are cheap! The 24 pin connector got snagged and tore to bits when I took my psu out of my old case

I really love this case, all my components look far nicer in this than my last one!

Only problem is tho that my mobo doesnt have an internal 3.0 usb port so I have to splash out on some adapters. I dont know if this is some kind of sick joke from Asus by printing "USB 3.0" right where the connection should be but oh well, thats life!

First time ever playing around with cable routing but Im just going to keep this messy for now until I get my cable sleeving to do up all the visible cables!

Double checked everything and hit the power switch surprisingly it all worked first time around (bar the H100i + connected fans because I didnt set them up at this stage)

So I didnt like having the fans on top of the rad open just in case someone comes along and jams something in the middle for some reason so I took the mesh that comes on the top of the CM Storm Scout 2 snipped out just enough space to fit the screws through the mesh and into the fan/ rad.

I had a small spare blue LED laying around so I wired it up and cable tied it right under the handle on the case (it looks really intense in the picture but from being under the mesh its actually quite subtle)

Day two of the build was more or less stumbling down to the local pharmacy with a splitting headache and then getting some very odd looks when I asked for some isopropyl alcohol.
They had none so I ended up checking online what was the next "best" thing, methylated spirits.
I REALLY hope the information I came across online was correct and didnt damage my cpu

So before I passed out for a million hours today I decided to attack my old case with some snips and cut out a gpu backplate.
I spend just over two hours working on this and most on scraping off the crappy paint and exposing the raw metal.
To mount the "backplate" to the gpu I used some old mobo stand offs but the threading was just a bit to big so I ended up filing them down so they will fit without damaging my gpu.
In my opinion it looks pretty dam sweet from just playing around with something and Im DEFIANTLY going to get something like this professionally done!

So here she is, naked. I call her Otsim.
I really think today is the start of a very good relationship <3 biggrin.gif

I have to do a few more things to the build tho so I wouldnt say Im 100% finished, but then again I will never be 100% finished tongue.gif
Next on the list is the following:
Custom cable sleeving (I have the Corsair GS700 PSU, its non modular so I have to get extensions)
New/ better gpu backplate
Psu cover/ hdd bay cover

If anyone has any cheap ideas on what I should do next just let me know! biggrin.gif

EDIT: After running for 5+ hours I've noticed a really dam annoying vibration sound from the mesh onto of the H100i fans. This is totally my doing and so easily fixed, all I have to add to my list is small rubber washers to take in the vibrations. Then again from simply pushing into the mesh stops the vibrations and keeps me sane for now! thumbsupsmiley.png

Ok so I got sick of looking at the "backplate" I made yesterday so I decided to tare apart my old case and make a backplate outta that instead! biggrin.gif

I removed the top of my old case and measured out the length of my graphics card

Final result after filing down the edges. I spent a dam long time filing this thing down!

I removed the blue paint from the inside and hit it with some black.

The top of the backplate looks pretty snazzy!

I had no screw driver so I had to just force some random screws into the top of it.
Mounting the same way, with filed down mobo stand offs

The backplate clears the card completely all around the card and has enough space for the power connections to the card itself
