I've moved the drives around and now have the SSD sat on a AMD port set to AHCI.
I've then got the Seagate and the DVD-RW also sat on the AMD ports but set to IDE.

there was also a firmware update for SSD via Magician which i installed.

the numbers are looking much better than when i started but are still some way off AndyM95's numbers (post #2)
I'll prob give the image off, secure erase, restore this weekend.

I've also got a side question about the page file which may or may not be affecting the speed of the drive.
with the 2 drives I have (240gb ssd and 500gb sata2) and 5gb RAM on a win 8 64bit OS, what size paging file (if any) should I have?

looks fine, you wont get faster with a secure erase really. you are limited by SATA 2

automatic page file by windows

You're on SATA2. You're probably already hitting the limits of your set-up. Looking at the benches you're getting now, I don't think backup, secure erase, restore would do you much good.

As for pagefile size, I normally use 1GB just to be safe. You could try disabling the pagefile entirely. If nothing crashes, you're good. On one of my systems (7x86, 4GB RAM/3GB useable), I had to bump up the pagefile to 4GB because I kept getting low on memory messages. Firefox is a RAM hog. Unfortunately, that PC uses a capture card with 32-bit only drivers so I can't really do anything to solve the lack of memory.

That's about all you are going to get on SATA2 as far as transfer speeds go. Those 4K speeds are more important as far as system speed is concerned. They are not going to get much better on SATA3.
About your side question, page file is not going to affect the speed of SSD but it just might do some more reading and writing to the disk. With 8GB of memory on a 4 core, I killed the page file and no app complained about that yet. Depending on your use of memory you might be able to lover page file to about 2 GB just in case.
