upgrading from i7 2600k to i7 3770K for a gamer? pointless? what about i5 3570k? downgrade?

Would be going from a i7 2600K to an i7 3770k for me, primarily a gamer, beneficial or a waste?

I do have a GTX680 and it can't run in PCI 3.0 mode obviously because I don't have an ivy bridge.

I also just want to upgrade because I could still make a good sale on the i7 2600 before the price degrades too much.

What about the i5 3570k ? would that be considered a downgrade or upgrade?

I also do video editing on sony vegas for my youtube channel (www.YouTube.com/XxD3cayxX) and render times are important to me.

OTher than gaming, and video editing , that's the main use of my PC.

Are you not happy with your 2600k? If you are still happy with the 2600k, I would say wait for haswell and see how they perform smile.gif

i5 3570k would be downgrade because of the lack of hyperthreading that would speed up video encoding. I hear pci3.0 does nothing for gaming. people make a big deal out of it because it's a bigger number. I dont think you would see a huge gain in FPS with going from a 2600k to a 3770k. Someone prove me wrong?

2600k to 3570k is a downgrade , now a 2600k to 3770k would be considered AT BEST a sidegrade , the 2600k still rocks the gaming charts !

A 3570k would be more or less of side grade. If you must upgrade, I'd purchase a newer stepping/revision 3770k-Mobo combo on the cheap once Haswell drops.

I just "upgraded" to a 3770k- I would rather have the 2600k, but prices were higher at the time of purchase, so I went 3770k. I would keep the 2600k if I were you.

2600K is the baseline for "fantastic chip" lol.

The only real significant "upgrade" you can do at the moment is to go w/ a 3930K and a new mobo... which is probably too expensive to really be worth it. And i'm not even sure you'd benefit from it as a gamer since most games may not utilize the extra threads.

Thanks for the replies guys, now I understand it may be a side-grade to the 3770k

If I do decide to do this, I will keep this in mind, just so I don't have to sell the 2600K next year and get less money, which I could sell for more for right now, but I will do it for the purpose of just keeping my setting up-to-date, not necessarily for a big performance boost.

Thanks again.

You are going to see at most a 2-3% increase going to a baord with PCIe 3.0. Current cards don't even max out 2.0... Upgrading to Ivy is more of a side grade than anything else, and I don't really see the point in doing so. The only reason I have a 3770k is because my 2500k died... after my board took its life. So i got a new board and chip.

frown.gif I miss my golden 2500k... sad-smiley-002.gif

save the $200-300 and put it towards a second 680.  That'd give you more performance than a 3770k ever could.
