An Asus DGX or at the most a Creative Soundblaster Z.
That's all a HD558 needs to reach its maximum potential.

Seeing as he wants it mainly for gaming, id say the Z by a long shot (speaking as someone who went from a DX to Z, With HD598's and modded HD555's)

do you want a sound card or a good external DAC/AMP?

My first recommendation is almost always the Fiio E10.
Its fantastic for headphones, and has outputs for external speakers as well.

get the sound blaster z, i have the exact same headphones as you do i am enjoying the card and this has been the first sound card i have purchased. the drivers actually have some great features that really enhance the experience. i was testing my sound setup out the the movie looper, the gunshot effects sounded incredible.

It's not compulsory to have one, but if you have the money and have nothing to spend on... sure why not?

The HD558/HD598 actually fluctuates a lot on its impedence so isn't actually 50ohms as stated by Sennheiser. It can go up to 80ohms quite often (or in some rare cases, touching above 120ohms), so eventhough the HD558 is rather easy to drive it still WOULD benefit from an amp.
