Hello everyone,

Long time reader. First time poster. I finally decided to sign up in hopes to possibly contributing to the community.

I find the topic of pushing the envelope of the status quo facinating especially with regards to PC's. Specifically the cooling aspect is one of personal interest.

I'm not a thermal engineer, or any kind of engineer for that matter, but I'm tremendously curious and want to learn as much as I can.

I've been in the PC arena for 20 years, and have always avoided overclocking due to fear of replacing expensive components. Although I have no problem modding my car, being more expensive than my pc. Go figure. I hope to reverse this sentiment.

I've also decided to venture into the overclocking arena because I'm due for an upgrade. I'm waiting for the IB-E releases this summer/fall? and plan to go full throttle. I'm hoping to get a 4930K. Not the X because of the cost justification, but nevertheless, plan to OC it and cool it appropriately. My current setup is a GA-EP45-UD3P, E6850 3.0Ghz, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 550Ti. I need an upgrade.

Another thing to note is that I recently acquired a 45U, 19" 4-post open rack. I've used this to consolidate all of the PC related "appliances" into a single 19"x19" area, saving myself a great deal of real estate and wire management issues. buh bye dust bunnies...

Anyways I hope to also take the cooling solution from the new PC, a rack mount 2-4U, depending on cooling, and perhaps apply some level of cooling the whole rack. Even if its simply adding sides and doors to the unit and putting fans on the bottom and top. But thats in the future.

Anyways...I'm glad to be here.

Welcome, you really will learn alot on here. I always run across alot of interesting information on here.

I wouldn't even wait to upgrade if I was you, all the CPU's released since Sandy Bridge perform about the same. I keep wanting to upgrade but just can't justify it from a performance standpoint.

you know... I don't take a lot of convincing to go buy a new pc, lol... I know the performance difference has been estimated at about 10% between a 3930k and a 4930k, but any idea what the cost maybe? That's really why I'm holding out for...

I've been eyeballing fora few months:
GA-X79-UD3,
i7-3930k,
32GB ram (Corsair?),
NVIDIA Quadro 4000?? (I do video stuff and ACAD/inventor)...
OCZ RevoDrive 3 X2 240gb
a 1-30" monitor HP or Dell...

That's about it...

oh, and its gotta be rackmount... 4U is fine... I have the room...

so I'm really just speccing a workstation... I don't play games on my PCs...

Thanks guys for the welcomes!!

I'll post if I pull the trigger on the new rig... I just have to work out cooling...
