3770k - Extreme temperature change within a few hours

Thread Starter
Rig:

i7 3770k
Gigabyte Z77X UP7
H100i Cooler
Kingston Beast Hyper X 16GB 1600Mhz
x2 EVGA GTX 670 FTW Sig 2
TX850 PSU

So, I might as well start by letting you guys know that I've reseated the heatsink twice and also tried reverting back to the stock cooler. Nothing's getting me back to somewhat normal temperatures.

This post might be a little here and there. My thoughts are scrambled regarding this issue. Apologies in advance.

Anyway, Sunday afternoon, I was using my computer as normal and started playing DiRT3 for a while. After a while, the game crashed and I was greeted by a bluescreen (it went away too fast to get a picture, but I'm certain it was a CPU overheat). I had to reset CMOS to get the rig booting again. Logged in, temperatures were wildly different from what I'm used to. Before, running at 4.5GHz @ 1.27V, I was getting max temps of about 88c with an OCCT Linpack enabled test with idles at roughly 40-45. Not great, I know. Now, however, I'm getting 50c+ idle with 90c+ max load at 3.9GHz under volted to 1.1V. This in itself is a massive step forward compared to what I was getting earlier (104c idle - shut it off manually to mess with some stuff).

I noticed I had the pump for my H100i plugged into the fan controller. Not sure how I did that, probably in haste to get back to the usual. I plugged it into the CPU fan header which seems to have gotten me to a somewhat stable temperature, albeit totally ridiculous for my 1.1V 3.9GHz clock setup (LLC ON).

This happened literally before my eyes and I have no idea what's happened. Like I said before, I've reseated the h100i CPU block several times (all with new/clean TIM applications, Artic Silver 5), tried the stock cooler and nothing is getting my temps back. I expect the TIM to settle in over the next day and reduce temps to roughly 45c idle, but that's not saying much at a puny 1.1V.

I thought the pump had gone in the H100i, but it doesn't seem to work out seen as temps quickly drop from an OCCT max load test back to their idle state. I have literally no idea what's going on.

I'll throw you guys a CPU-Z screenie to see if you can see anything odd. Hopefully you can. This rig is no more than 3 months old and has functioned almost perfectly with exception to the odd overclocking niggle here and there.

Air bubble in the H100i tube maybe? Try inverting it.

Are the temps in the screenshot idle or load temps?

Huh, possibly. Should I simply remove the radiator and fans and hold it in the bottom of the case (I have it roof mounted so that would be inverted for me).

Also, will I hear/see any significant change? Should I leave it running over night to shift it back to the pump?

Thanks for the suggestion. One thing I never thought of.

@ Ukkooh: Those are my current idle temps, 3.9 @1.1V.

You said you were getting high temps with the stock cooler?
Did you set everything back to stock? No O.C. at all.

The pump should be plugged into SATA for power first of all for the h100i.

But also make sure you have the backplate for the h100 installed correctly as well.

Yes, it's powered by the SATA cable. I was referring to the 4 pin header cable running from the pump to read the pump RPM.

@ski-bum: Yes, board reset to optimized defaults. Currently running a manual set up forcing 1.1V with a x39 multiplier.

Sounds like air bubble to me also. (which isn't normal for a closed loop)

Do you have another cooler to try?

Only the stock one which didn't seem to help anything.

Is it possible for the CPU to lose some of it's thermal efficiency due to a hardware crash or anything like that? Or, is it possible for the TIM underneath the CPU heat spreader to go bad suddenly?

I've never had the most efficient CPU, but for temperatures to go this sour with no real indication of the problem is very odd indeed.

Please note, I've tried another cooler and it's just as bad, if not worse. It doesn't seem to matter what's on it, it's just overly hot for no apparent reason.
