posted this in another thread, but I think it's worth pointing out.

"However, this doesn't just mean that there's NO change between the 680 and 770.  The biggest thing is the 7Ghz memory.  Not all cards can hit that.  I'd go as far as saying that MOST 680's can't hit 7Ghz on memory completely stable for gaming.

So there must be a change somewhere in there, and somewhere on the core considering the base clock is raised on all of them. "

I don't understand how flashing would feasible for 90% of 680 owners. I mean, number one...I guarantee not many 680's can hit 7Ghz memory nice and stable, so you'd have to downclock before running every game. Second of all...the 1.21v limit on 680's is a hard limit, correct? How would a BIOS flash, which countless people have done with 670's and 680's using modded BIOSs from the 670/680 threads, make any difference? Just because the BIOS is for the 770 doesn't mean it can bypass a hardware limitation.

So...basically, because of those 2 reasons, I don't know why anyone would even want to do this. Couldn't you just use Kepler BIOS Editor to adjust the stock speed to whatever you are stable at? Instead of flashing the 770 BIOS and probably not being stable at 7Ghz memory clock?

Edit:
Maybe for SLI with a 680, if you have one and would like to get a 770 for a lower price, and you need to flash to get the cards to run in SLI? But even then, you would most likely have to use KBE to adjust the memory since 7Ghz may not be stable.

Flashed it on my cards, runs stable, with afterburner reporting I can change the core voltage (not the mem/aux however). Don't have my multimeter to check the voltage however. Lightning clocks vs this 770 BIOS has the 770 about 5% faster in the runs of Valley I've done so far, still installing all my stuff on this new install redface.gif

Edit : AB reports load voltage of 1.12 & 1.10 respectively

can you get any higher OC's?

Other than the BIOS difference, I'd assume there are other inherent slight differences in the 770 just from have such a mature development life time.  The manufacturing process at this point has probably been so fine tuned that they can squeeze a little more out of these cards.

Did the BIOS bump your 680's memory to 7Ghz.  That's where I see some problems arising for those flashing their cards.

Haven't tried any OC'ing yet, gimme an hour or so and I'll let you know. Temps are way down from the 680 so I should be able to OC a little easier. Memory did get bumped to 7GHz, although my card could do that before a flash anyway so its not really an indicator I guess.

Completely agreed, DPH - I see the entire flashing business as a worthless endeavor for two reasons. One, not all GTX 680s will be able to sustain 7GHz VRAM speeds. Secondly, this is nothing that one cannot do on their own. You can easily clock the 680 to 770 speeds, or in many cases higher - the highest overclocked 680s will still be faster than the 770. So why bother? I mean, does anyone feel validation of self worth by just having a video card with a 7 prefix instead of a 6? Seems like an utter waste of time to me, since the BIOS does nothing that you can't do by simply overclocking. A BIOS will not magically change the electronics and VRM on your card. Just IMO. Waste-of-time. But hey you can get a 7 prefix now!redface.gif
