Just because you can flash a 770 BIOS to a 680 doesn't mean the clock speeds are the only difference. The 770 is rumored to have 6+8 power, for example, which should give you more power overhead for (hopefully) higher voltages. If I'm not mistaken, the GE is exactly the same as the non-GE except for clock speeds. Still a cheap trick though.
Can one of you guys that flashed already comment on the voltage?
