[The Register] Apple asked me for my Bank statements, says outraged reader - Page 2

I think she wanted to stay anonymous so everyone with a brain didn't make fun of her for the rest of her life.

What even blows me away more is apple's admission that if you don't hand over the info they will cancel your order. WOW.

She sent the information first, THEN had second thoughts and contacted the police/bank. Not very smart though, a Nigerian prince could have gotten rich from that.

I would have just let them cancel the order. I'm not willing to send anything more then drivers licence and censored check with my name on it.

I work at a computer shop and we do something similar, if people send through credit card details we sometimes request a photocopy of drivers license or passport to confirm their identity.

Imagine if someone had stolen this woman's credit card and tried to buy 10 iPads with it and Apple didn't have this security in place.

this seems a bit pathetic to me, if you don't want to give over your details don't. They're trying to do what's right by the customer. You're welcome to go into the store and buy it where you don't need this extra ID.

as stated in this thread- the real joke here is the "victim"(who works for a IT company lachen.gif) here.

she complied with the requests and THEN started to hit the panic button and began to cry about potential fraud.

but let me get this straight, so apple refused to sell her merchandise because they needed to confirm that the customer's credit card was valid? and they wanted this all by email? (again lachen.gif)

The same thing we've been doing for ages: file a police report for fraud, reimburse the user for any potentially lost funds and put them on fraud alert.

What would happen if someone stole her credit card, was rejected by Apple but still bought stuff from other retailers? See above.

Utterly useless security tactic that only serves to attempt to save Apple some legal headache at the expense of your privacy.

Real problem is the credit card company's like Amerigo Vaspuchi Express for instance. When a retailer has an item legitimately billed and shipped with proof to the correct address and the customer disputes it. Such company's more often than not side with the customer no matter how much proof you have.

Same here....

Though, to be honest, this is a good measure in some aspects.
