3 Monitor Non-Gaming Rig

Looking at building a multi-monitor setup. 3 minimum at 1920x1080 each. This system is for a trade desk and will not be used for gaming, but must be able to handle all the monitors cleanly. Prefer SFF and low noise build. Here's my initial thoughts on a setup...

SilverStone Temjin Series TJ08B-E
ASRock H77M LGA 1155 Intel H77
EVGA 01G-P4-2650-KR GeForce GTX 650 1GB
CORSAIR CX430M 430W ATX12V
Intel Core i3-3220
SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD250BW 2.5" 250GB SSD
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
LITE-ON DVD Burner

I am wondering if there is the possibility of forsaking the GPU and just going with a i3-3225 with HD4000 onboard graphics. I have not found a motherboard so far that definitively supports 3 monitors. Has anyone got a tri-monitor setup to work with integrated graphics? I do know that is at least theoretically POSSIBLE with intel series 7 chipset boards. Thoughts are welcome!

Asking about a trading computer on OCN? I think that is the first I have seen. I don’t know of any mobo that will do three monitors, and I don’t think you would be happy with the results anyway. There are a whole series of workstation cards from ATI and Nvidia, they range in price quite a bit, and some are fanless.

I can’t tell you which one to get since I usually just use gaming cards for my trading setups, being that I trade and game. I don’t know if we are allowed to mention other forums here, but the hardware section of elitetrader will get you a lot of responses about building a budget trading rig. The site itself leaves a lot to be desired but you will get some good responses about trading rigs.

What can I say, I like to push the envelope. rolleyes.gif I think a GTX 650 would be more than adequate for pushing the pixels required for 3 monitors. Another option may be a passively cooled Quadro 300 along with Virtu MVP to drive the 3rd monitor using the mobo. Besides not having a fan, I'm not sure what the advantages the Quadro would offer over a gaming card.

You'd have to get a motherboard with a DisplayPort output in order to make a three-monitor integrated graphics setup work. See HERE for more details.

two of the cheapest imaginable (modern) GPUs capable of handling two monitors will have no trouble with any non-gaming work at 1080p. You do not need displayport for this resolution, you can even get away with vga for 1920x1080.

Any gpu in the 40-50 dollar range ought to be able to handle this duty, and you don't even have to sli them, unless you want to run in surround mode. My motherboard has a problem running the integrated graphics chipset along with my two GPUs, though I don't see why you cannot run iGPU alongside any other single one... I ran like that for a long time with my ancient celeron rig.

Requiring displayport for a third monitor seems to be an ati only thing, though I could very well be wrong about that.

EDIT: There is no indication that you are required to use displayport for a single monitor on the iGPU in the previously mentioned link. Only that it supports "up to and including" whatever resolutions with a displayport interface for up to 3 output options running on the iGPU only. The example makes no mention of a graphics card, or running three monitors at once.

EDIT 2: because fail.

My motherboard (asus maximus IV gene) will do three monitors with one graphics card and onboard.

If you can swing it, I would say get the cheapest newest architecture card you can. You could even get two so that you can disable onboard graphics to avoid any issues with using both (not that I have seen any outside of games). This would give you the option of adding a 4th monitor (i assume you are doing portrait mode) if you desire in the future, and would be cheaper than getting a specialized system for running multiple monitors.

edit: another option would be a PLP setup, which I had for a while, and is great for multitasking, especially if you have one screen you almost always concentrate on, but others that you need to watch at the same time or need to be able to glance at often.

I was also thinking a pair of GTX 610s would work, although it eliminates the possibility of using a mITX board. Probably going with mATX though anyway. 610s can't be SLId, but that doesn't seem to matter.

check which cards support three monitors at the same time. I know the 760 and 780 do. maybe some of the lower ones also do.
