worth waiting for steamroller? - Page 5

I would go with either the ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX/GEN3 R2.0 or ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z the cool thing about that new sabertooth gen 3 is PCIX 3.0, although both boards are AM3+ so you wont have a problem when steamroller drops. pair that with a newer Piledriver/ Vishera processor depending on your budget AMD FX-6300 or AMD FX-8320 you can always sell the piledriver chip when you upgrade to steamroller.... I sold my Phenom II x6 and recovered most of my money back for the piledriver upgrade, and it was quite a big leap in performance for me, I do a lot of video editing, also play swtor a few hours a day, never had any issues, if anything its my 560ti holding the rig back now.

WOW! That is a fantastic idea you guys. I could buy in now for cheap. And once steam roller hits, I will be able to decide if its worth upgrading to that, or getting whatever intel has atm if it turns out to be better, or if I ended up being content with the fx I could just keep that.

My real concern at the moments is relieving the bottleneck on my 5850(my e6600 is maxed out in some newer games). I don't have any plans on upgrading it right now(was planning to keep it even if I got the 4770k). Surely the fx-6300 could do just that.

So in that case, I figure it would be best to get a cheap mobo? So if I decide to buy into steamroller, I could always upgrade to that processor and to a newer mobo with newer features.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Okay, I have decided I am going to go with this plan. Was looking at the fx-6300 and the 6350 as they are both on sale.

Only stipulation I have with a motherboard is it cannot be asus. I had a really bad experience with their rma service with my 5850. It has turned me off of their products for life.

My only needs for a motherboard is it needs to have 1 pci slot for my soundcard and have some overclocking features and it cannot be asus brand.

Im not saying their products suck (I have a asus mobo and graphics card right now and love them), its their RMA service that killed it for me. It took two months and 3 rmas until I got a working product(they sent me my card back unfixed two times).

And I want to spend no more than $85 on the mobo. Trying to keep this cheap.

I stand behind my original recommendation

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130637
It's hard to beat for the price and I have always been happy with MSI products.

I had to RMA a MSI 550ti awhile back and it was relatively painless, just had to wait about a week or two to get another one. However, I don't know any manufacturers that have a really quick RMA turn around. I did RMA a Asus board once and the one they sent back to me had a bad sata controller.

No motherboard under $85 will handle an 8 core with a decent overclock. Stock they will though.

^^^ My plan is if I decide to buy into steamroller later on in the future. I will replace this mobo with a newer higher end model. I wouldn't use whatever I get with steamroller.

Okay, I think this would be easier.

How about I set an absolute limit instead as I will need memory as well since I currently have ddr2. Lets say I want to spend no more than 270 (for processor/ram/mobo

Was looking at the fx-6350 at $129. THat leaves me with around 140 to split between a motherboard and ram.

Can this be done?
Yes, if you get a board for $80 or less. 8 gigs of DDR3 1600 goes for around 60 dollars. Personally I wouldn't go with less ram, I consider 8 gigs to be the new standard.
