help with irregular lag spikes

Thread Starter
My internet is fast most of the time. However, occasionally, my internet becomes extremely laggy.

For example, my average ping in steam is around 50. During these lag spikes, ping goes from anywhere to 400 - 1000. The only way for me to fix it is to restart my router. Once restarted, everything goes back to normal.

Anyone know what could be to cause of this?

Thanks!

my router is arris by verizon

edit: verizon not att

You probably have a bad router or a faulty connection (assuming you have an adequate data plan). ATT's router/modems are pretty terrible IMO. Also keep in mind that ATT is one of the companies that has taken on the six strikes policy. So if you're pirating or even downloading in whatever fashion they consider "irregular" they will throttle your speeds and eventually ban you from their service entirely.

When it was laggy, i switched ethernet cables which then turned my internet back to normal for about a couple minutes. Then, the internet went back to being laggy. is verizon throttling my internet? i read that they will send a warning first via email or text but i never received it.

Ive gotten literally hundreds of notices from xfinity/Comcast regarding "allegedly" queationable warez frm various sources. haven't throttled my speeds yet. thankfully. how many times a week do you reboot your modem/router?

I usually never reboot. the only time i reboot is when my internet starts to lag like crazy. once rebooted, my internet goes back to normal. do you think its verizons problem or the router?

I normally revoot my router/modem twice a week. I worked for a couple years at an ISP in CT. It is highly recommended to reboot your router/modem at least once a week biggrin.gif

when i do reboot my router, it starts to lag within a couple hours or the next day

do you use a firewall?
i´d maybe get some program that shows your traffic and watch the pc while it idles.
maybe somethings wrong there and some program is communicating and making this trouble.

i never read or had a problem like this.

it also could be due your ISP or router itsself.. but i lack knowledge to tell you exactly

check with your isp, and reaffirm your mac address with them. I know on my xfinity accnt they had some weird random mac addy in the database for my router, which was tied to another users account who had a lower package than I had signed up for which created all kinds of hassles one day out of the blue. use windows monitor and watch your traffic and see if there's something that is using your bandwidth. hell you may be part of a botnet unwittingly rolleyes.gif
