Asus Xonar DGX or Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio

Hi guys, due to budget constraint, I am tied down to two choices of sound cards:
1) Asus Xonar DGX
2) Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio

I can get my hands on the Creative sound card for half the price as compared to the Asus DGX.

I do not use headphones and my audio setup is currently the Edifier M2300 2.1 Speakers (http://www.edifier.com/eng2005/product/s0048_01.htm). Mainly for light gaming, movies and music.

Would you guys think that it is worth it to get the Asus DGX at double the price of the Creative for a non headphone user like me?

Please feel free to comment. Thanks!

(P.S. The option to get better speakers is out of the question at the moment. Cheers.)

Go with the DGX, the X-Fi xtreme audio isn't a real X-Fi card.
Besides that, it's also got a bigger reputation than the DGX to just not work — at all.

DGX is only $50 or so, I'm sure you can spare at least that much right?

Yea I have seen better reviews and opinions for the DGX too. Hence I assume that in your opinion $50 for DGX is still of greater value for money as compared to $25 for the Creative Xtreme Audio? smile.gif

Precisely. Eventhough $25 seems like a good deal for the Xtreme Audio, I'd personally rather spend a little bit more to avoid the issues.

Let's say both cards work fine. Does the DGX has better sound quality and performance as compared to the Creative if I am not using headphones at all? Only 2.1 speakers. Cheers.

To be honest I have not heard the X-fi card. I have heard a rocket fish card that had an X-fi chip on it, and it looks almost identical to the X-fi card.

If these two cards are anything alike, then all I can say is stay as far away from that card as possible. There is almost no difference between in an decent on board audio. DGX is much better. thumb.gif

Yes, the DGX has better sound quality than the Xtreme Audio, on all fronts. The DAC on the DGX is of higher quality, it comes with a decent entry level headphone amp, and it's got better driver support through the modded Uni Xonar drivers (the Xtreme Audio is as dead as a dead fish can be in terms of support. Even the modded PAX or K-Daniel drivers isn't stable on it).

One last time that I would like to reiterate, the Xtreme Audio is NOT a real X-Fi card.

Totally in 100% agreement with this.
