[EGT] Microsoft drops the Blue codename, confirms Windows 8.1 for free. Preview June 26th - Page 3

To be honest, if your biggest gripe is "I have to click desktop, hit enter or hit space to get to the desktop at boot" than you should sort your priorities, and see if a life in technology is really for you. Aside from that, I make apps run at start up (steam big picture mode) on my Win 8 HTPC. Works fine.
It is Forced if you want to use Windows 8, which is what we are talking about here. I am continuing to use Windows 7.

As far as priorities, show me the button on my media center remote for the Metro screen that allows me to "click desktop, hit enter or hit space to get to the desktop at boot" then by all means I will do it. Pressing the Green Button does not do it. At the time, Start 8 was having issues with WMC (don't remember the details, just did not work for me).
And you proved my point, why should I have to write a script or download 3rd party software to do something that every previous version did automatically?
Microsoft has realized what many users want out of the box so they are fixing it.
If Windows 8 works for you they way you use it, great, but don't tell me to "set my priorities" and see if technology is for me.

The HTPC thing is a legit concern. There should be an option to boot right to it, which as you said, they are fixing.

Microsoft's versioning has never made sense. Remember that Win2k Workstation and Server were 5.0 + 6 different SPs. WinXP was 5.1. Win 2003 Server is 5.2. Vista is 6.0 while Win7 is 6.1. Hell Win8 is still technically NT 6.2.
Again, show me how to click with my WMC remote to get to the desktop on an out of the box Windows 8 install.

Is it one click for a regular desktop, sure, but it is one more click than before. So what if next time it is 2 clicks (well, only 1 more than last time) and so on. The point is it opens to a screen that many users don't want or use, so why force it. Microsoft sees this now and is correcting it.

Once this comes out I will give it another try.

Why not have the option to boot to the desktop out of the box and never see Metro.
Metro is forced since you need to use after market products to make it boot to desktop.

This logic is kind of silly on an overclocking forum.

People here will spend hours upon hours just trying to squeeze out the last couple hertz out of their hardware to gain absolutely nothing. Yet everyone complains when they have to take a measly two seconds at the most to click the Desktop tile and not have to do it again until the next boot.

It's funny and sad at the same time.

You are comparing apples to oranges here. People squeeze out the last hertz not because they realistically expect any sort of practical improvement. People do it for the following reasons:

- To tinker. Some people just love to tinker and there is nothing wrong with that.
- To see how far their computer can go at a set voltage
- For e-peen purposes as chances are, it will show up in a benchmark

This is completely different from the UI which most do not tinker with for fun, but rather favor the convenience and existing ease of it. It cannot be compared at all to overclocking, voltage tweaks, cooling, ect. Now there are some people who like any type of shiny new toy and that is fun. For most people however, the interface is something we want to see radical changes to last. It's something that many, MANY of us want mostly consistent and the popularity of 3rd party apps bringing back the start button proves it. MS bringing or considering to bring the features back proves it. What MS did here was a complete violation of the consumer experience IMO. Anytime such drastic changes are made, it should be an option and not a strategy of greed where MS is forcing us into a unified interface. If I wanted a touch interface, I would be using a freaking tablet, not a desktop PC.

Can most of us who hate this new UI "learn it" and "get use to it"? Absolutely we can. It is well within our learning abilities. Will we? That is an entirely separate matter as the question still remains for the vast majority of us. Why the hell should we? W8 hardly offers sufficient advantages for people to abandon W7, which works perfectly fine and does not have Metro all together.

Then I suggest using W7 and leaving Windows 8 users and their threads alone. I don't go bashing Linux on a Linux forum for the heck of it. If you Windows 7 "works perfectly fine" then what are you upset about? Dont use 8. You're not missing anything, and you have nothing to complain about since you have everything you need in 7. But no...you come here to complain. So you are expecting something...so maybe there is a short coming to W7 that you hoped for in W8...maybe W7 isn't as perfect as you say it is? And know one is forced to used W8...just like no one is forcing you to use Linux. No one is forcing you to do anything. You really don't know what "forcing someone" really is.
