Oculus Rift Information Thread

Thread Starter

I am extremely excited about the Oculus Rift. As a 3D Enthusiast, I believe if Oculus Rift is done proper, it will truly destroy any 3D stereoscopic game out there.

I will be adding more info to this thread as much as I can in time. Feel free to join the conversation.

Also anyone with Ocolus Rift Development Kit and experience gaming with it?

What is Ocolus Rift?

Current 3D is not really doing it to me as I want it to. 3Dvision is still nice but when Ocolus Rift is out and if it is done proper, than RIP 3Dvsion.

I wonder if all 3Dvision 2 games will be somehow compatible with the Rift.

Problem is you need absurdly high density screens for these setups, otherwise people's eyes attempt to focus on individual pixels. These headsets have been done to death, and they NEVER sell well because of this problem. They simply suck.

Not to mention, who wants to sit there with one of these on their head when a decent monitor works just as well? Neat idea, but it is impractical for the vast majority of people to sit around like that. I don't see this as groundbreaking, innovative, impressive, or as having an real potential in an open market.

And in a few years when this flops, or is a massive success, you can feel free to drag this post up.

At minimum, the only thing that will make this an actual commercial success will be if they implement extremely high quality LCD or OLED or whatever they need screens into this thing. That is the deal breaker... I am talking better than 1080P resolution, per eye. Considering the large FOV they are talking about, it is likely they will need to run 4k resolutions in this thing...

And good luck doing that.

Yeah the resolution is an issue at this point. As far as I know the Development Kit is 720p only. However the company claims to have 1080p soon. Few of the reviews I read always mentioned that rift was doing its job very good however the pixelation was mediocre.

Maybe in the future they come up with Ocolus Rift v2 which can be an oled screen at a much higher resolution.

And weather ocolus rift will be a success or not we shall see... 3Dvision was also advertised a lot and not it is fading away.

I literally have like no real interest in this headset because It just seems to be anmother one of those hype gymics that wont actually take strong practice because it requires things to be worn.

I WAAAY prefer eyefinity setups(I call both NVidia and amd eyefinity FYI) because you don't have to wear anything, they work great with video editing and work station and with AMD's eyefinity at least... it works with almost every game natively ANYWAYS.
Occulus will take new stuff with new drivers with new graphics card support and it just looks...dumb.

I'd much rather spend 400$ on a triplicate of 1366x768 screens and set up some low spec Eyefinity instead of wearing a headset like that, wearing a gaming headset is irritating enough, add that occulus thing... yeah i'd be too annoyed of the things weight to actually be that taken away by it.

Where as an eyefinity set up bam 3 screens automatic resolution support. max graphics... aaah sit back and watch that game in its full span glory...

Im standing behind the ultrawide screens(21:9s) and the eyefinity set ups, just like when I said 3dVision would never take of, and it never really did.
3dvision was a gimmick, and so will this occulus thing.

Don't mean to be a debidowner but yeah...I wanna see more ultra wide screens and higher pixel densities more common on gaming rigs. I'm not one for VR, and 3dVision junk unless I can do it without wearing something.
Like the 3DS
Gimme a screen for my PC that does that without glasses or goggles and i'd totally be fore 3dvision, yeah!.

1080p resolution is far too low for the aspect ratios they are talking about, I honestly don't think 4k is even enough.
