Wireless Extender or new router?

Thread Starter
The current situation in my parents house is that the router is in the furnace room in the basement. My dad wants to have better wireless in his bedroom, 2 stories up, but the wireless signal is **** up there. The router we have is a mid range 5 year old dlink (can't remember model) router.

My questions are as follows. Would we see a good increase in the wireless signal if we go out and buy a top of the line router like the Asus RT-AC66U? Or would it be better to get a wireless Extender and put it in our living room half way up? The main goal here is to get a stable signal to the bedroom, not looking for a huge speed increase or anything. Thanks for any help!

I'd get a couple extenders so there will always be only one access point, that what I did for my parents and they love it.
