Find a used 6950 and crossfire, or wait and buy a 7950?

Thread Starter
I'm currently using a 6950, but it's starting to show it's age in modern video games. I've been looking at buying a 7950, but I'm reluctant to spend 300 dollars on a new video card when I could be putting it towards better RAM or an SSD card. I've been thinking that I should instead find a used 6950 for ~$100 and crossfire instead. How is crossfire performing right now? Are there any issues with it I need to know about? Is it too risky to buy a used video card? Also, I won't be able to afford a 7950 for another month, but I could afford to get a 6950 now. Thanks for any help in answering these questions! thumb.gif

If I were you, sell the 6950 for about $100, and spend another $100 ($200 total) on a 7870XT. OC that baby, and they easily reach 7950 speeds.

What is your Power Supply too? Going to need a decent 600w for that setup. Fill out the rest of your system too!

I would sell the HD 6950 for 150$ + and get a HD 7950 or HD 7970

Here are my specs
Intel i5 3570k =
AMD 6950 2GB
hyper 212 EVO
ASrock z77 Extreme4
A-data 8 GB (4x2GB) 1600Mhz memory (1.65V)
Azza Solano 1000 Full-Tower Advance Cooling Case w/ Dual 230mm Fan + Extra 3 Fans
750 Watts - Corsair CMPSU-750TX 80 Plus Power Supply

I'm using an original 6950 reference card by power cooler if that makes any difference in how much I can sell it for. My PSU can easily handle two 6950s. I'm somewhat reluctant to sell my 6950, as I was considering putting it in a second computer if I upgraded to the 7950. I also don't really want to go any less than the 7950 in terms of power. As I also mentioned, I'm interested in getting an SSD and upgrading my RAM, since my RAM is rated at 1.65V. I currently have it downclocked to 1333Mhz so I can keep it at 1.5v.

EDIT: also what can you guys tell me about the drawbacks of crossfire? I've heard a few negative things, but I'm curious if they've been fixed somewhat or not.

Your PSU is good enough for CrossFire but I would aim for a single card especially until July. AMD says frame pacing beta driver due in June/July timeframe

Why not get a GTX 770? It will release at the end of the month.

Why not get a GTX 770? It will release at the end of the month.

I wasn't aware that there were any high-end cards being released before near the end of the year. Is this confirmed? If so, are there any reports on what the cost will be?

I'm personally waiting for the HD8000 series to come out and for prices to drop so I can consider a second HD 7950. It may be worth waiting and get another HD 6950 then. You might find a new one at a better price at that point, or be able to pick up a used one even cheaper on a flooded market with people looking to upgrade. I'm no business major though, so don't quote me on price trends.

This. A 7950 is a beast at 1920 x 1080, especially if overclocked. Mine is at 1100/1500, and it brutalizes everything I throw at it.

The GTX 770 is just a rebranded GTX 680, with a small bump in clocks. GTX 780 is basically a nerfed Titan.

I suppose I'll just wait and get a 7950 or a 770 if it's affordable and performs well enough. I might consider doing crossfire 6950s if I see a really good deal, though. Thanks for the advice!
