AMD APU's Good for gaming? (Help)

Thread Starter
I'm thinking about building a cheap gaming rig to run games like starcraft 2 at 1080p and other light gaming, and I was just browsing my options because I don't care to spend a whole lot of money of this, and decided to look at the AMD solutions as they tend to be much cheaper, and I always here members on this site rave about amd apu's. Anyways so searched the most expensive apu on newegg assuming it's the best, and I found the A10 5800k for $129.99 CAD , how good is this apu? and how well would it handle SC2 at 1080p?

How long of a wait would I have for new apu's from AMD to be released? , and lastly is there any reason to but the more expensive mobo vs the cheap ones? I will be doing is game wit a single hdd or ssd and that's it..

this is the best i could find so far:

Battle At $140: Can An APU Beat An Intel CPU And Add-In Graphics?
keep in mind that is a Llano with Radeon HD 6550D whereas you are asking about a Trinity with Radeon HD 7660D (which is ~10% improvement)

you would probably be interested in:

generally if you don't mind medium details to play @1080 then its a good choice.

me being you i would wait for the A10 6800k i think is two month away from now.
this is a test on the a10 5800k APU... playing moderm games, so i think SC2 would run with some tweaks between low and mid settings

I pump out 70 fps with my 5800k at 2560x1440 with 2x aa.

I can see about giving sc2 a try if I can get my hands on a copy.

Any other games you are worried about?

Whatever you can squeeze into the budget.

I hear time and again you won't gain much with the hybrid xfire, so if you can best that I would get a 650.

You'll do better just CFing it with an 7750-7770. I'm seeing them under $85 after rebate or open box.

I own and reviewed the A10-5800K and A8-5600K if you want to have a look

I thought they did surprising well and OC extremely well.

Hope it helps smile.gif
