Streaming results in in-game slowness - suggestions?!

For a couple months I've been tinkering with streaming Starcraft 2 with OBS settings below, but I get some in game slow-down so I just end up turning it off.

Where am I being limited? I'm guessing it's a hardware issue, but I just want someone to confirm my suspicions and give me some more knowledge/tips on the subject. My sig rig is up to date by the way.

OBS Settings

Thanks much~

What preset are you using?

Fastest, Faster, Fast, Slow, etc?

EDIT: Your up/down isn't going to affect your gameplay, just your stream quality. That said though where did you get those numbers? And who is your provider?

Streaming takes a lot of CPU horsepower, your i5 is probably struggling to keep up. Especially as it's StarCraft 2 which is very CPU intensive to begin with. Do you have the processor overclocked at all?
Open task manager while you're doing it and see if your CPU usage is at 100%.

Preset is at "Veryfast"

My provider is Charter. Stable 35/4 almost all the time, rarely varies, but yeah I don't think this is the problem, I just wanted to throw it out there so people weren't asking redface.gif

HI Andy -- Thanks for the response. Yes, I have it overclocked from 2.66 to 3.5

I can't believe I didn't think to open task manager and inspect the core usage, but I will go check it out right now! Doh!

Okay, after some initial testing, it looks like CPU usage bounces between 35-45% on each core, RAM usage just under 4gb

Going to do some more games to see if this changes at all.

Even after cranking up the settings a bit, my core usage is still between 35-45%

You don't really need a great pc to stream I don't think.
I'm also going to assume you've already picked the best server to stream to.

Anyways here are my OBS settings

Quality - 10
Max Bitrate - 1800
Buffer Size - 1800
Res Down Scale - none
FPS - 30
Aero Disabled
Audio Bitrate - 128

- Advanced / X264 CPU Preset: Medium

Download 50mbps
Upload 3mbps

I stream at 720p 30fps with literally no problem, and I could even do 1080 30 on sc2 with these settings. zzzz

Oh I tested everything on an 3770k without HT 4.2ghz

While these are useful settings they don't adress the issue at hand which is his in game slowdown, hes not reported issues with the stream.

I currently hat 20 down and 6 up. I limit my bitrate to 1200 though for 720p and 60 fps.

OP, your i5 should be fine especially at veryfast. What are you using to capture? In game, Screen region, or DXTORY?

I noticed you have a 5770. I was running into issues with my 5830 alternating between 3d and 2d clocks when I was using windowed mode + screen region and even in game capture. I fixed this by switching to DXTORY (Paid option) and I also changed my GPU to run at base 3d clocks 24/7.

Best way to test this is pull up after burner or CCC on 2nd monitor while playing.

RIght, its not the stream quality, its that I can "feel" the stream while playing.

I will have to check to see if I am using screen region, in-game capture, or DXTORY although I believe I am using screen region + widowed (fullscreen) mode.

How do I switch my GPU to run at base 3d? Or how do I even check which I am currently using?

If you are using windowed full screen on a blizzard game its a high possibility your GPU is changing it's clock speed.

Do you play all games in windowed full screen?

To change the clock speed you need to edit the text profiles.
Here is what I used: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=117633

I just set my 2d clock to be the same settings as my 3d.
