For air-cooling i'd go w/ the Zalman 9700 that Enterprise suggested..

sadly they kinda get owned by the new heatsinks .. they are still good for cooling a single core OC

As you have read, the opinions are rather wide insofar as selection.

All the tower coolers have superior cooling abilities, along with the BT and the Zalman 9500 or 9700.

Essentially you have about 5 to choose from.
  • Tuniq Tower
  • scythe Ninja
  • Noctua 120
  • Zalman - 9500 / 9700
  • Thermaltake - BT

These are not the only ones that are good. I is merely a guideline. Take a look at the specs, in particular the material used, the surface area of the material and the cfm that compatible fans will yield. You will notice a trend.

Thermal management is a science, and one of the most pertinent factors being the ambient temperature.

Considerations for your choce:
  • Do you have the space inside your case for a tower?
  • Using coolers that are compatible with a 120mm fan are most effective
  • Surface area of the cooler itself.
  • HS material used
When reading our answers bear in mind that we all live in different climates. Ambient temperatures and humidty play an integral part in the air-cooling of your rig, and how well you will be able to shed heat.

Also, the level of your OC/and the Vcore applied will play a significant role.

Hope that this helps you arrive at a happy decision.

Thread Starter
Thanks to all... I'm looking for a quiet fan, on my current setup I had a tornado and that was loud as hell, changed it for a quieter one and made me much happier - actually stayed the same temp aswell

So the spec has to be quiet, the case I'm getting is fairly big so space shouldn't be a problem.

Oh, and E.Honda is cool, don't shivver over him.

I've got a Zalman now for my E6600 and it works fairly well. I've got a Tuniq tower now that I need to install once the case comes in. Benchamrks suggest Tuniq is the best though.

if you have the room in your case, it's tough to beat a Scythe Infinity. i have one on my E6400 @ 3.2 and i get 32C idle and 38C max load (running SETI@Home 24/7 for 4 days straight)... in Southern California in a warm room. 120mm fan on low speed.
