AMD Radeon HD 8970M "World's Fastest Mobile GPU"--AMD

The new AMD Radeon HD 8970M looks like it's going to be a BEAST! (like we didn't already know that...rolleyes.gif)

From MPC:
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/amd_bills_new_radeon_8970m_worlds_fastest_mobile_gpu2013

Those numbers look pretty impressive, and I look forward to seeing how independent testing results compare. biggrin.gif

The 780M is already just that much faster than the 680M and then some. The 8970 doesn't stand a chance. tongue.gif

8970m is a rebadged 7970m with a 6% improvement from a clock rise or so i read ?

to be fair, if you can OC your 7970m your already 6% faster than a 680m and $350-400 cheaper

Ok so the 780m is faster.. but the price is again eyewatering.

Id plunge for a 8970m laptop not because its the very fastest but because its the very fastest for the money

If it's anything like the 7970M people will spend months fighting the drivers and optimization issues to tap into the power on hand.

I'm a fan of AMD and own a desktop 7970, but their 7970M has been too problematic for too many people for me to consider an 8970M without some solid evidence that the enduro and optimization issues are gone.

Check here.

Scores ~7700 for the GPU portion in 3DMark11. :3 Compare that to the ~6100 that the 680M pushes. biggrin.gif Win.

c'mon theres no win from a benchmark. As others have said the mobile drivers for AMD can be appalling almost like they didnt bother at all which is shockingly poor customer service. In their defense the price of the 7970m is silly low for the power that is 'potentially' there.

When it works you can be very smug. When it doesn't your stuck out on your own waiting for a chance of a game patch that sometimes never arrives. Id still get one, but then again im a sucker for tweaking and will put the time in.

Thanks for the link, and I saw the other thread you made for the 780M. It's great to see both companies pushing the technology forward. With good competition, I think we all win. What a great time for anyone looking to make a new purchase! biggrin.gif

agree. Its ridiculous how far mobile GPU technology has leaped in the last 2 years, basically high end desktop fast. Even the cheaper cards can game well enough.
