Need help with some electronics please!

I want to know whether it is possible to make my own SD card reader using a PCB mounted SD reader, a small custom printed PCB and an internal usb header, I would have thought that it would be easiest to put a socket for the header on the board and then just buy an internal USB 2 cable. The bit that I need help with is if anyone knows how the wires need to go from the card socket to the USB socket? Any help would be much appreciated!

Uh, SD cards are not USB compatible.  You will need a microcontroller with SD card accessing firmware in order to convert between SD protocol and USB protocol.

Okay thanks for that, is there any way of using an external USB card reader and then making an adapter from internal USB to external USB or would it be easier to use USB 3 as they have readily available adapters from internal to external, I found this USB 3 card reader that might work:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Super-USB-Single-Reader-Writer/dp/B0085Z49NG/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1368621826&sr=1-4&keywords=usb3+card+reader

and then use an adapter to turn the MOBO header to external USB 3 then add an extension cable. I would rather this than use a 3.5" reader as this has to fit in the back of the Powermac G4 I am modding to replace the lock for the side panel, the hole it leaves is the perfect size for a SD card and as I do a lot of photography/videography an SD card reader would be very handy!

That looks better!  Just make sure that your USB wiring is USB3 compatible (i.e. don't use single 30 gauge wires to connect the motherboard's USB connections to the card reader).  I'm assuming that you'll just mount the USB SD card reader to the inside of your computer case so that the SD card slot lines up with the slot in your computer case.

yup already have the adapter and then I will just buy a regular 1m extension cable for USB3 and then I need to figure out a method for mounting the Card reader to the inside of the case
