Current Gen Emulators Release Date Speculation

Thread Starter
I've been playing a lot of previous generation console emulators lately and got to thinking when the first time we might see current gen consoles get emulated? When ps4 and x720 come out how long until the current ones are obsolete enough to legally be allowed to emulate?

Does anyone know for instance when ps3 or x360 came out how long until ps2/xbox emulators came out?

Thanks thumb.gif

PS3 sales started in 2006 with a PS2 emulator not too far behind. Once PS4 comes, there really shouldn't be TOO much of a delay with the PS3 emulator I hope. The thing is current computers have much better hardware than those of the past and should be able to keep up in the hardware aspect, even though the games aren't specialized for the hardware we have.

My biggest concern is the space needed for games as the current gen console games hold a lot more data than previous consoles.

I'm hoping we both live long enough to see it thumb.gif

I know Nintendo systems have a track record for the being the first ones to be emulated with the best compatibility. Wii, Gamecube, DS, GBA, GBC, etc were all emulated well within their lifetime.

I predict Wii-U gets emulated long before PS3/360 do. In fact the Dolphin emulator dev team is already working on a Wii-U emulator. And they're among the best and most skilled in the gaming console emulation community.

I predict a Wii-U emulator that runs commercial games in as little as 3 years.

I'm not expecting a PS3 emulator that runs commercial games any time soon. Emulating the PS3's cell CPU is going to require an astronomically more powerful CPU; nothing we currently have is anything close to as powerful as needed. Maybe when they got non-silicon based CPUs running at 8-10ghz with far superior architecture.

Xbox 360 and Ps3 emulator? Maybe in a decade or so. Emulator release dates aren't dependent on their older brother getting released. If you've looked into it, PCSX2's first release date as

That's quite a few years before the PS3 came out. Even now we have a hard time running some games, there's not 100% compatibility. Does a PS1 emulator even have 100% compatibility yet? I have a PS3 for a reason, and that's to play the exclusives, and I guess the blu-ray player is an added bonus. Besides that, is there really a point to having it? At this point it's pretty pointless to emulate any current gen console. The amount of work put in, and the hardware required to run it is just not worth it IMO.

Very unlikely to happen. The architecture of the PS3s CPU is really complex, most game devs don't even know how to take full advantage of it. I'm not sure about the 360 though.

Next gen consoles (excluding Wii U) should be a lot easier to emulate in theory because both are meant to be using x86 CPUs. You will need one really powerful rig though. Next gen consoles are using 8 core APUs, 8GB GDDR5 (PS4 at least, the XBO is going to use 8 GB DDR3).

By the looks of the hardware, the XBO should be a lot easier to emulate than the PS4.

If I recall correctly devs used XNA to develop games for the 360. I'm not an expert on this subject, but wouldn't it be easier to somehow port the games to PC, than it would be to try and emulate an entire xbox?
