Mid-range SFF build

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I have to build a mid-range mini-itx rig.
Main tasks will be web surfing, office stuff, photo editing and some HD movie playing.
No overclocking planned.

I know Haswell is coming very shortly, but to keep budget low I am still looking at Ivy or Sandy Bridge.
What do you think of the following parts?

Case: Sugo SG-05 (450W)
Mobo: ASROCK B75M-ITX
CPU: (1)Sandy i3 2130 or (2)Ivy i3 3240
Cooler: stock
RAM: 2x 4GB DDR3 Corsair Vengeance lp
GPU: (1)GT 630 or (2)GTX 650 (both with 1GB DDR5)
SSD: 64GB (Win7 home + programs)
HDD: 1TB (data)
Monitor: 27"

Would the stock cooler keep the Ivy under high temps or do I better choose the Sandy in that regard?
I don't want to bother finding an aftermarket cooler that fits both the mobo and the case. rolleyes.gif

I guess the GTX 650 is worth the little extra money (~$40), right?

Any other suggestions?

Cheers,
BaK

Hi B2B smile.gif

Stock cooler is fine. Consider the 7750 as well for GPU. You don't really need 450W in there.

Everything looks good. Both i3 should perform the same but the ivy uses less power.
If you don't plan on gaming with this machine, just stick with the integrated gpu and save some money

Good suggestion, as I took this option myself! tonguesmiley.gif
I just didn't want the rig owner to be disappointed, especially when watching movies.
I have to check how my 3570k behaves with 1080p movies, hopefully an i3 with HD4000 should perform the same.
Anyway, I could start with iGPU and if it fails somehow I could still add a GTX 650 in a next step.

So I will switch to an i3 3225@3.3GHz that comes with an HD4000.

Looks like you are right:

Mobo = 30W (?)
i3 3225 = 55W
GTX 650 = 65W
SSD = 5W
HDD = 15W
DVD R/W =30W_
TOTAL = 200W (Max TDP)

That makes:
Case: Sugo SG-05 (300W)
Mobo: ASROCK B75M-ITX
CPU: Ivy i3 3225 (HD4000)
Cooler: stock
RAM: 2x 4GB DDR3 Corsair Vengeance lp
SSD: 64GB (Win7 home + programs)
HDD: 1TB (data)
Monitor: 27"
(GPU: GTX 650 later if needed)

Agree?

why wouldnt an i3 be able to play 1080p....

my android stick (dual core, cortex a9) can play 1080p movies streamed from my nas (raspberry pi attached to a 2tb external) with no problem

Reading other posts here, I notice people are recomending AMD A10 APU over Intel i3 when not gaming but only watching movies.

Should I switch for that combo?
ASROCK FM2A75M-ITX
A10-5800K @ 3.8GHz

Is the stock cooler quieter than the Intel one?

Price is the same than the Intel solution, I am much more confident in the latter as I have never tried AMD yet...

I highly advise you not to get that motherboard as its known to have problems. Even if the problem has been fixed in a new revision, I still wouldn't trust it. Get the Asrock A85 instead.
Asrock FM2A75 fire

The A10 will use more power but can be overclocked and be able to do some light gaming.

Is there an online store that you will be purchasing from?

A few thoughts...

Integrated graphics will work fine for what you describe.

Intel stock coolers work great at stock speeds. Quiet, reasonably low temperatures, no additional cost. thumb.gif Just gotta install it properly, and set a silent fan profile in BIOS.

AMD or Intel will both work. I would actually recommend Intel for this particular build because...

You don't list an optical drive. If not using an optical drive and if willing to use only 2.5" drives you can get something like an Antec ISK 110 case. The included PSU will work for Intel, but not for AMD (at least the A10) due to the power draw. Alternately is an in-between case like the Antec ISK 300-150, with a bit more power and cooling, and support for optical drive plus low profile graphics card for future upgrades. Don't know if those are available in your area, but there may be other options too. For a web/office/photo/movie machine with integrated graphics and no optical drive,

If you do end up with the Sugo SG05, consider a few things.
1) Even with graphics card you can use the cheaper 300W version and still have more than sufficient power.
2) Silverstone released a "Lite" version that does not include power supply, PSU support bracket (not needed if not shipping the system, probably not at all), or the extra unbranded bezel trim. At least here in the USA you can get the Lite SG05 and the same Silverstone 450W PSU separately for around $10 less. Bonus is that if you buy the SG05 450W you get a 1 year warranty on the case+PSU. If you buy them separately, you get a 1 year warranty on the case, plus a 3 year warranty on the PSU. You can also opt to use a different brand of PSU (consider FSP or Seasonic).

I was going to point out a current hot deal on RAM (8GB Crucial Ballistix Sport for $40 shipped), but USA pricing only.

Hi Zap, thx for your answer.

I should have listed it, I only mentionned it in the power calculation, but an optical drive will be used.

I Didn't know that Antec ISK 300-150 case, very nice one.
I will look into it, but I guess it will be hard to have ODD + HDD + SSD in there, while keeping room for a graphic card in case of...
Any example of a GPU that will fit?

From what I see, I don't have the option here to order a Lite SG05.
I could order it to Silverstone directly, but with extra shipping/customs costs.

I will now propose the Intel build to my friend, hope he will like it.
