Just because the 780 is an improvement over the 680 ($499), it should be more expensive?

Of course the 780 will be an improvement over the 680, else what would be the point or why would anyone upgrade?

By some logic here, since the 880 will be an improvement over the 780 ($650), it should be priced at what now $850?

What about the 980, should that be $999 when it releases?

NO, base price should remain around $400-$500 for the X80 GTX card - period. Otherwise, you could reason that each iteration of the card should fetch a price that will eventually reach the stratosphere.

I'm sure most people here agree with you on that. We are realists though, and have seen Nvidia's pricing habits as of late. So while we may not agree with it, we have to brace ourselves for it.

Wow.
True wisdom. I totally agree. Sadly when new hardware parts are released the mind buggs out.
And this is also the main discussion, if it is not that expensive everyone would get one thumb.gif

It really just depends if Nvidia is releasing 700 series for marketing or if it's to get rid of unused inventory.

If it's for marketing it's going to be on the high end. If it's to get rid of unused inventory, I'm going to lean towards it being on the lower end (of pricing, and only pricing I'm discussing here).

I am guessing Maxwell is about a year out or so. Where Maxwell falls into the equation will also probably determine the price, because if Nvidia is sitting on a lot of poorly yielding GK110s and full GK104s that should have gone to GTX 680 and Maxwell is coming in 6 months or so, they're going to want to dump those Keplers if they have a lot.

Trying to guess the prices of 700 series is no good if we only look at historical Nvidia trends. We need to think about their inventory and yields. My guess is that yields are up and they no longer need to prioritize selling GK104 with one SMX disabled as they are getting enough full SMX GK104s now.

I don't know, better yields, lots of left over inventory, it could be a lot of things. It could be a mix as well.

I don't think it's the Titan cooler, it just looks like it but that doesn't necessarily make them the same. Just sayin...

Why? 780 is GK110, 690 is GK104...

224 - 32 = 192 TMUs (14% less)

Plus the 3GB which is half the 6GB of Titan, but lets not kid ourselves, it's all we're going to need.

Having 14% less cores will also help net higher overclocks than the Titan, so we can expect about 20% slower than Titan performance for half the price?

wink.gif

I bet it will have 40 ROP's. It will be an awesome card at the right price.

That's really what they should be priced at.

This isn't a stupid question, actually a great question, and the answer is we don't know. smile.gif

If they they keep ALL FP64 cores in tact, it will be. eek.gif

I wouldn't be surprised if it came with 1/24 FP32 though.
